Garden City cracks down on!!!

I would love to see Dodge City step up on this problem as well.

WICHITA -- Newly revised traffic laws in Garden City that impose mandatory jail sentences for drivers repeatedly caught without a license or insurance have spawned fears among some Hispanics in the western Kansas meatpacking town.

Hispanic leaders say the measure particularly affects illegal immigrants, because a Social Security number is required to obtain or renew a driver's license in Kansas.

State officials have said 15,000 driver's license holders got their license without a Social Security number. The Kansas Department of Revenue has also estimated that at least 160,000 Kansas drivers have no insurance. Estimates put the illegal immigrant population in Kansas at between 50,000 and 70,000.

What you don't have to be legal or have papers to get one? That is nuts. I know we get people from all over here on vac. and other things and that is fine. They are not here to get free food, get a job illegal and then send all the money to that great place they have came from.

I was 18. Riding a moped down Ave B. A women pulled out in front of me and ran over me. Tore up my leg and crushed my moped. She was an illegal alien with no insurance. She ran from the scene and luckily a good samaritan chased her down and found out where she lived. I got 80.00 out of them towards 600.00 in damage before the disappeared.

I was 24, worked for an appliance store. I was heading up Central Ave in the work van in the one way, left lane. A women crossed over from the right lane through my lane to make a left turn and struck me. She obviously was not used to driving in a one way. She looked at me and then sped off. She was hispanic. I tried to chase her but the van was very crippled. I never caught her.

I was 35, worked for a large corporation. I was driving down US 400 when a woman pulled out into oncoming traffic. I struck her and totaled both vehicles. She was an illegal alien with no insurance, no setbelt and no drivers license. She had a baby in the back that was not buckled in. The baby was thrown clear and was not seriously injured. The woman had a broken arm and a broken pinky finger. She unsuccessfully tried to sue our company. Our company counter sued and got a judgement but have never received a dime. She disappeared from the face of the earth- became somebody new maybe?

Is it fair that I HAVE TO PAY for insurance that will cover ME AND THEM and they don't pay a dime? NO, it's not.

Is it fair to use the "We need a SSN" excuse? Not when you get forged documents to work but wont use them to get insurance. While you may need a SSN to get a drvers license, I don't remember them asking for it to get insurance.

Regardless, if you can't drive legally and bear the burden of risk, then don't drive. If you don't like our laws, the laws that protect us, then get the hell out.

When I lived on 4th a car with 3 Hispanics turned the corner off Spruce and hit my parked pickup. We caught them as they were trying to peal their car off my pickup and we saw 1 Hispanic running away on foot just turning the corner down the block.

Neither of the 2 remaining spoke any English, or so they pretended, and when the officer showed up they said, now in English, they didn't have a license with them and showed an outdated insurance card from the Republic of Bolivia. They were allowed to get back in their car and leave.

My pickup was totaled and of course all the information they gave was bogus.

The story was the girlfriend and boyfriend in the front seat were fighting over the steering wheel when they turned the corner. The guy in the back seat hit the street running as soon as the accident happened.

Just for your information there are several drivers arrested each week here in Dodge City for no drivers license. Look in the globe under the jail section and u will see them.

I was involved in a wreck over a year ago and the driver was a white girl about 25. She did have insurance but not enough to cover my damages, so luckly I have under insured coverage. My insurance covered the difference. I spoke to a couple of lawyers and was told the law in Kansas does not allow me to sue her for the actual damges. The law says you only have to carry $10,000 property damage. Her insurance company only paid what her coverage was which was $10,000 and my insurance had to pay over $7,000.

Not fair to my insurance company.

I believe Garden City is just trying to make sure their citizens are safe. As far as I am concerned the law targets everyone without a license not just immigrants. I looked all over the article and never found where it mentioned they were targeting immigrants without license's it sounded as though they were targeting anyone without a license.

Furthermore mr Minjarez said he didn't want an "anti-immigrant" atmosphere...I don't think that's the case...He did leave out one KEY word...ILLEGAL

I don't have enough money to get any of the commish to listen to anything I say. Do you think THEY care about what WE think or what is good for the plants and everything else....
