Finally somebody got 'im!

Father of Marine awarded $2.9 million from Phelps family for anti-gay protest at funeral

BALTIMORE — A federal jury delivered a $2.9 million verdict Wednesday against the Phelps family of Topeka and their homophobe Westboro Baptist Church, a Kansas church that picketed the funeral of a Maryland Marine killed in an auto accident in Iraq last year.

It is believed to be the first individual lawsuit against the Phelps, who are infamous for picketing military and other funerals around the country. They do not contend that the dead soldiers are gay, but that their deaths are punishment by an angry God against the United States for its tolerance of homosexuality.

A grieving father, Albert Snyder, sued for unspecified damages after members staged a demonstration at the March 2006 funeral of his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder.

Family and church members, under the leadership of Fred Phelps, Sr., routinely picket funerals of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, carrying signs such as “Thank God for dead soldiers” and “God hates fags.”

Their actions have prompted several states to pass laws regarding funeral protests and Congress has passed a law prohibiting such protests at federal cemeteries.

Finally!!! Somebody stood up for themselves and a judge listened! This does a whole lot more toward getting rid of them than passing stupid ordinances.

It’s always fun seeing a pain-in-butt Democrat smacked down.

Only a Democrat could be a hateful loony-toon like Fred.

Try typing “Fred Phelps Democrat” into a search engine.

May 1966 Files to run as a Democrat for Kansas State House, 45th District.

Fred Phelps

Phelps has run in various Kansas Democratic Party primaries five times, but has never won. These included races for governor in 1990, 1994, and 1998, receiving about 15% of the vote in 1998.[34] In the 1992 Democratic Party primary for U.S. Senate, Phelps received 31% of the vote [35] Phelps ran for mayor of Topeka in 1993 [36] and 1997. …Turns out that Phelps is a full-fledged, registered Democrat!
"In 1988, Phelps housed campaign workers for Al Gore's first presidential run; in 1989, his eldest son, Fred Jr., hosted a fundraiser for Gore's Senate campaign at his home . . . Because of their years as loyal Democrats, the Phelpses have even been invited to -- and attended -- both of Clinton's inaugurations."

Homocon: Democrats Hate Fags (Like Me)

Phelps ran in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Kansas in 1992, and ran for governor of Kansas in 1990, 1994 and 1998, according to the Associated Press. Phelps received over 49,000 votes from Kansas Democrats in his 1992 campaign.

During the 1980s, Phelps was photographed with Al and Tipper Gore at Democratic Party gatherings. Homosexual activist groups, including Log Cabin, questioned the Phelps-Gore connection during the 2000 presidential election, but Vice President Gore denied any affiliation.

I don't think his party affiliation has anything to do with it. He would be a nut job no matter which party he belonged too! I am glad to see that someone finally nailed the a$$holes. They ought to be glad that some grieving parent hasn't already shot their asses or something!

True MIT, but I thought that there might be a couple of the folks that should know.

Update:

BALTIMORE — The father of a fallen Marine was awarded nearly $11 million Wednesday in damages by a jury that found leaders of a fundamentalist church had invaded the family's privacy and inflicted emotional distress when they picketed the Marine's funeral.

The jury first awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages. It returned later in the afternoon with its decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress to the Marine's father, Albert Snyder of York, Pa.

The point, as I see it, is not any money, but the Phelps will have to spend a lot of their time and money in court, not at funerals.
