Republican and Democratic lawmakers in Kansas are drafting separate bills targeting undocumented workers, as anti-illegal immigration fervor engulfs this Midwestern state where thousands of immigrants have settled to work in livestock feed yards and meatpacking plants.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers in Kansas are drafting separate bills targeting illegal immigration amid fears about a potential influx of illegal immigrants from neighboring states that have already cracked down.

"I don't believe Kansas should become a sanctuary state as other states continue to pass legislation," said Rep. Brenda Landwehr, R-Wichita

It would revoke business licenses and impose civil penalties on any Kansas business found to have employed an illegal immigrant, enforce federal law denying public benefits to illegal immigrants and strengthen local enforcement efforts.

The measure also would impose civil and criminal penalties in illegal immigrants and prohibit Kansas municipalities from becoming "sanctuary cities" by opting out of state immigration reform.

That's all good and well.....but our Democrat Gov. will probably veto any bill they pass.

I talked to a lady that worked at Excell and she told me they were "laying off" some of the people that they couldn't verify their documents. Actually they tell them to get it fixed and they just don't come back. I asked her if they leave town, she said not really they just find jobs working at hotels and such here that don't ask about citizenship. Hmmmmmmmm.....guess we need to start checking the hotel staff.
