Sorry to pop your bubble but thats simple math.
It may not be completely scientifically correct in that form. But, it is still the truth, TB was virtually eliminated from American soil, then the illegal problem started and TB was re-introduced into the U.S. and is flourishing.

My few years at the National Beef packing plant exposed me to it. While I never had the disease and currently don't have it, my exposure to it was enough that for the rest of my life I will have a positive reaction to the TB skin test.

My "sources" come from living in the state that sees the illegal before you do. I also work for the Health District and run 2 immunization clinics........... but you must of course know more than I do and see more than I see - forgive me for trying to explain - I was just being silly. - oh did I forget 30 years in health care?............. what the hell - just thought I'd throw that in for grins. -

PS the CDC also said that fella had Drug Resistant TB - I believe I scoffed at that one too. It's all OK tho - ya'll keep hidin under your beds cause there are illegals out there breathing. The resurgance has to do with the fact that the last Pertusus (whooping cough) vaccine you got was at age 4. There is a new TD with Pertusus (TDaP) and while I'm on a roll - you also need a 2nd Varicella (chickenpox) cause there is a big resurgance of folks getting chickenpox that were already vaccinated.

Ya'll are just too paranoid for me or perhaps too radical - I'm just not that fearful. Your exposure to TB Bubba coulda been from anyone - the TB molecules are so light that when a patient coughs the TB molecule can hang in the air for 8 - 16 hours. It's just a little bastard all by itself and our already existing social ills has much to do with the resurgance. Think homeless, no insurance, drugs, jails, etc.

Bubba I hope you took the prophalitic meds for your exposure - cause TB doesn't always go to the lungs - it likes organs as well and there's no fast way to diagnose that. By the time they get it diagnosed it's too late usually. Had a woman in last year whose sister died from TB Menningitis - it's pretty nasty! TB has always been serious stuff - and it wasn't nearly wiped out - I think you will find it was underdiagnosed and undertreated. It's been alive and well in the jails for decades.

Good stuff, Texie. But I'd rather think that ALL our ills, social and medical, are from the newbies. That way I can always look down my nose. The truth is, aside from all you've already pointed out, Texie, is that there are the very poor and underprivileged citizens in the Appalachians. They might share a nurse-practitioner for every two or three towns. Their teeth rot in their heads - barefoot and poor isn't just a saying. We all think of underprivileged and immediately think of starving children in other countries, while there are plenty right here in the good ol' US of A.

These folks are starving to death! And dying from disease we just take a few pills for. They aren't available to them. Until we take care of all of us, there will be those diseases we thought we'd taken care of. Stepdaughter called from college one day a few years back to tell us she had measles. Measles? Thought she'd been vaccinated. We called her mother, who gave us the year of her vaccination. Sure enough! Someone had determined the vaccines were only "good" for a certain number of years and her number was up. Where there are children and young adults and there is shared everything from shower towels to hair brushes and (eek) toothbrushes, there will be pockets of disease.

Politically acceptable to blame the newbies, but it ain't right. They carry blame for enough. Let's not hang 'em with this, too.

There ya go KC - Women have always been more reasonable - a lifetime in vaccines is bout 20 years - altho they don't drag folks in for boosters. Usually your risk for childhood disease is as a child. I just don't knee jerk as good as I used to and I just don't have that political aspect of it all. Course this isn't a recipie board but I would say there is a pretty good mixture of paranoia goin round!

I was told by my doctor at the time that due to my age that I didn't really need to take meds since the TB wasn't active in my body. Also, that was about 9 years ago that I first tested positive on the skin test.

Are you saying that I should get a second opinion on whether or not to take the meds?

I wouldn't want to put any unrealistic fear into you - I'm just saying you are 9 years older, probably haven't had a chest xray (which you should bout every 5 years) - I would suggest you go to the CDC.gov website tho and look at the recomendatations. - Just a thought! I would also suggest you deal with the health District on TB not your local yocal. Ask for thier TB program director and take your old - positive test with the millimeter reading. A positive test sometimes isn't positive cause the person that read it or placed it wasn't really proficient in the test. If you don't have a "mm" reading then you need a new test to verify. Were you more than 15mm or 10mm? If you don't know - get a test while you are there.

The older you get - the more you need to know.

I actually had a chest xray while they were doing all my tests when they determined my gall bladder was acting up a few months ago. It was all good.

That's terrific! My point was to not be complacent because some MD 9 years ago told you not to worry (ever) . You don't need to worry and be fearful - you need to be aware of what you have and take care of business. Which is where I think I came into this dialog. Never rely on just ONE study, One opinion, One point of view - there are many out there and they are truly as valid as you make them. You shouldn't have to climb to the top of the mountain to prove a point. It's a point none the less. Take it or leave it -

I'm glad you are healthy just remember TB is "opportunistic".............. it waits

And I still don't buy that communical diseases are the rath of the illegals. I agree they increase the stats - no one can argue that - but they would have increased without them (illegals). They didn't bring it here - truth be known it's been here a very long time. The only thing completely erradicated is Smallpox. Wild virus polio is still around not here in the US I think but I would have to go look that one up. There are cases of monkey pox but again not in the US. Most these things are in the enviorment....... they too just wait for a host. So keep your shots up!!!!

I throw this to ya for grins. - this is why stats can come bite your ass in medicine. I know they are impressive but never forget your own mind and knowledge!

THE REPORTING OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES -- MARIER 105 (6): 587 -- American Journal of Epidemiology

I don't and didn't mean to be argumentative - if you felt I was - I'm sorry! My issue is fear keeps folks unable to make informed decisions. What ever you choose to decide is up to you - my passion and my career at this time is to make sure my clients are informed of ALL sides and politics has nothing to do with it!
