National Beef cutting back on production in Liberal, Dodge City
National Beef Packing Co., the nation's fourth-largest beef processor, said today that a glut of U.S. beef is forcing it to cut back production at its two Kansas plants.
The company said operations at its Liberal and Dodge City plants will be reduced to four days a week. The plants usually run on six-day work weeks but the company cut back to five days earlier this fall because of falling prices.
The move will reduce slaughter by 10,000 to 15,000 head of cattle per week.
In a news release, Tim Klein, the company's president and chief operating officer, said the decision was "driven by unfavorable market conditions resulting in unprecedented losses."
Company spokesman Keith Welty said companies were trying to maintain their market share and processing too many animals.
"We're not getting the price to maximize our profitability," Welty said.
Welty said the production cuts will not involve layoffs.

I don't know how they cannot be making any money. I don't see the price at the grocery store going down any!
Maybe they should lay off some of their "Southern Help"!
