If we build a smaller event center it will be doomed to fail. That is why we can't get promoters to bring good shows to the Civic Center, not enough seat to sell so they have a chance to get their money back.

For the event center to even have a chance at working they need to have 7,000-10,000 seats.

Bubba,

I agree to some extent.

If a larger sec is our only option for success and it will be such a good deal, why not let the casino own and operate it?

Probably because that isn't the way we voted for it to work. That is the short but sweet answer...

Dodge board is full of great economic planners. If Dodgeboard ran the city we'd be the best place on the planet earth.

Mike - You have to consider that the Casino owner(s) might not want to 'own and operate' the SEC. A large multi-event facility like the SEC is a completely different business practice from a traditional Casino facility. Both are entertainment, but very different in cost, management and scope.

A Dodge City Casino may have small-group entertainment (i.e. a lounge act), but that's a far cry from the SEC where you have acquisition, scheduling, ticketing, and staging of 60+ events per year.

We shouldn't assume that every Casino developer is interested in owning or managing an SEC type of facility.

Also, remember that all applicants have had since June 26th to submit their application to Lottery, first with a 90 day period, then a 90 day extension granted to Ford County. It's not like it was announced yesterday.

IMO any group putting $100 Million+ on the line in Dodge City should expect rules that apply to everyone. This isn't just a popcycle stand. Everyone knows the content and time limit requirements for each gaming zone.

Also, the last application was much more that 5 minutes past the closing time...

clueless,

Your answer was good! I understand exactly what you are saying...maybe I should have asked "why not let the private sector own and operate the sec if it's such a good deal?"

I do appreciate your input...I'm always open minded...to new ideas...Lord knows I don't have all the answers but somewhere working together I think this community needs to think outside the box. I believe we need to incorperate the private sector more. The city and county are fine but partnering with private interprise could ease the tax burden concerning costly issues such as this.
