The car makers have a responsibility. Ford and GM can't continue to expect to make money with the sole fact that they should "buy American" especially when they are making an inferior product. We have moved towards a global economy and personally if I am going to drop 25 or 30 grand on a new car I want the best bang for my buck and in most cases it is not with Ford or GM. I understand you have a ford with a bazillion miles on it but that is the EXCEPTION not the rule. If you look up the consumer reports on cars and trucks while Fords are decent domestic cars they pale in comparison to the Japanese and even Korean made cars/trucks in most cases. By the way Ford moved into 3rd place behind a Japanese automaker. QUALITY counts buddy.
Would you buy a car from Osama Bin Laden Motors??

No but he is not a country. Why would you compare OBL to Japan?

I'll catch that question. If his car was designed to be one of the best running vehicles, then yes, I would. Especially if the pieces/parts were manufactured in the US and actually put together here. But since we know his talent doesn't lie in automotive design, it's a pretty easy question to answer. Besides, O doesn't own a car manufacturing company, let alone a car dealership.

Toyota and Honda are not Japan either.

Do you know that Muffie? How about oil then? You buy gasoline, yes? Money for foreign oil goes where? Are you sure that some of that doesn't go back into terrorists pockets?

No, I don't know it. But, as far as I know, he doesn't - but then we didn't know he'd purchased US stocks and dumped them just before the WTC, either. I DO buy gasoline. I suspect you do as well. So don't throw stones there just yet. I haven't yet found a way to get around it....but I can consume LESS gasoline by buying VW instead of Ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc. That's a documented fact.

I'm not arguing; to each his own. I just know that my relatives fought in all the wars up until now, and none of my family will buy foreign anything, if we can help it. Some of us "old timers" will never forget!

And it may surprise you Muffie, but I actually had a VW for a short time in college. Of course, my wife had it when we got married, and we couldn't afford to trade it. If got me to work on several cold winter nights. But believe me, the heater system in those old VW's really sucked!!

I wouldn't argue about that, either. It really is up to indivdual likes & dislikes - I know how some of the older generation can be. I think they fight it so vehemently because they're just looking at it as a foreign corporation - not that most of it is made in the US, so it IS a US product with foreign input.

I DO know about the old VW heaters! Had one when I was first married about a hundred years ago. That was the only car in the neighborhood that would even start, much less navigate the streets of Dodge City before they were plowed! But the heater sucked. Still wish I had it back, though....

Like as has been said before, when you buy American. Chances are you aren't buying American. Most American products are made in other countries.
