Where is the problem? 1st of all...WHERE does the money to PAY these students come from? SOMEONE has to pay for that. 2nd of all...shouldn't the families PAY someone to have their kids tutored...NOT the other way around? If the kid has no desire to learn or has to be PAID to get tutored then there's a problem. They should have free tutoring and the one's that want so be somewhat successful in life will show up. The others can sell crack on the corner until they get arrested or shot. WE are sending a horrible message regardless of it being an afterschool program or not. I wouldn't want my tax dollars going for it...

I put it in the same dimension as paying a child to clean their room. There are certain things in life that a child needs to see as their responsibility, and not something that they should get paid money for.

But if your kid doesn't clean their room, do they not graduate? How many of us, at 14, 15 or 16, were thinking about our future? Most kids think about yesterday, today and tomarrow only. Would you rather see them get a diploma or fail? Does it feel better to say "Told you so" or does it feel better to say you tried to help? We are talking a couple of hours after school for those who, for whatever reason, are not making the grade. Wether it be they are not applying themselves or they just can't grasp the learning......they are failing. We can't teach responsibility to parents, even though that should be done. So, you pay a kid 16 dollars a day to stay after school to be tutored until they are caught up. They do not try, or put forth an effort to learn in that envioronment, then they do not get to participate. It is not mandatory for them to go, it is an incentive.....which is the way anything gets done in our society. I see nothing wrong with rewarding good work and behavior....you apply yourself and you get rewarded.
