Paying Students to Learn....Ugh..

Fulton to pay students in after-school program

Creekside High and Bear Creek Middle will pay students $8 an hour for "Learn & Earn" program

By MICHELLE E. SHAW
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 01/22/08

Fulton County schools want to pay students to stay in school a little longer.

Forty students from Creekside High and Bear Creek Middle schools in Fairburn will be the first to try the "Learn & Earn" program, where students will get paid to attend after-school tutoring programs.

Students will make approximately $8 an hour, and be eligible for bonuses if their grades improve, said Kirk Wilks, district spokesman. The initial students are in the eighth and 11th grades.

There will be a community kick-off Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Creekside High media center, 7405 Herndon Rd., Fairburn.

With the support of Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts, the pilot program will last 15 weeks and pay students for participation and performance. The object of the program is to determine if paying students to study will improve classroom attendance, grades and test scores, according to a news release from the district.

The initiative is funded by Charles Loudermilk, chairman and chief executive officer of Aaron Rents, through the Learning Makes A Difference Foundation. The foundation is a local non-profit designed to improve education through creative programs.

The students chosen for the program were picked by school staff, based on attendance, grades, test scores and free or reduced lunch status, the release said.

Pay kids to do well in school? WHAT kind of precident are we setting here? How about this for an incentive...IF YOU DON'T go to school and pay attention you end up as sign holder "Will work for food or money"! Isn't this in Atlanta? They have one of the worst education systems in the U.S. and I see they are trying to lead the way. THe problem is they are going the wrong way.

Lightbulb

What is the difference in paying a kid to go to school and parents paying kids for good grades? A's - $10.00 , B's - $8.00 , C's - $5.00 , D's - $1.00 , F's = ASS WHIPPIN.

I wonder if the schools think that kids learn by osmosis? It didn't work for me..... Pay them to go to school? So they're there. If they don't want to be, they're simply a disruption and nobody gains. It almost seems as if they're trying to put butts in seats for state aid.......

When you guys see something negative like that from me, will ya call me on it? Just like ya did? I took an HR course in Orlando this week - just got back. They told us to always be positive. I'm trying.

I also read a book on the plane (going and coming) called The Secret. If anybody has read it, it's fabulous! It's all about the power of positive thinking. If I'd only read it 15 years ago, I'd be much, much, much better off!!!

That was my only pay scale when I went to school.

Pay a kid to get good grades? It's no wonder kids today expect something for nothing.

Over paid daycares is all our schools are any more.
