Well it looks like the economy is in the crapper and the government is going to borrow more money from China hoping you'll go buy that new flat screen TV you've been "needing."

Just remember whatever you get this spring you'll have to pay taxes on in April of 09.

Congress sends stimulus bill to Bush - CNN.com

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House on Thursday quickly passed a Senate-approved economic stimulus package and sent the bill to the president's desk for his signature.



The House voted 380-34 to accept the Senate's $170 billion measure, just a few hours after Democratic and Republican senators reached accord and ended a days-long stalemate over the bill.
The deal, passed in the Senate on a 81-16 vote, includes rebate check amounts of $300 to $600 for people who have an income between $3,000 and $75,000, plus $300 per child.
Couples earning up to $150,000 would get $1,200.
But the plan also gives checks to more than 20 million Social Security beneficiaries and 250,000 handicapped veterans and their widows.
Two White House officials said President Bush will probably sign the bill next week.

What sucks is that there are some people getting a rebate that don't pay taxes. Now THAT my friend is BUYING a vote.

I agree that it's a "buy a vote"/bribe. I wish they would take the money and do something else with it. It's such a small amount that it really won't "stimulate" the economy that much.

this will really be a blessing to these individuals...so pleased they were not overlooked.

The nearly $150 billion package Bush proposed last month was approved overwhelmingly by the House January 29.

So does that mean its republicans buying votes......

It's all of them...Republicans, Dems/Independents...they are buying votes. All this is doing is holding the American population off for a few weeks while they try to "fix" the economy...which isn't really totally broken yet.

It will be a blessing indeed! Low income people will also get checks which I disagree with. If you don't pay taxes and they are giving a TAX rebate how in the hell does someone making say.....12,000 get a refund? It's called WELFARE where I come from. They should not call it a tax rebate if people that don't pay taxes are getting it also. Lets just call it what it is. BUY A VOTE WELFARE PACKAGE>

I agree that it's all of them. In general most people are pissed off at the government right now. So if they give everyone a few bucks they hope to distract voters for a while. Remember, it's not just an election year for POTUS.

How nice to feel that the elderly (who don't "pay" taxes) don't deserve or need it. Good lord! Why is it that the poor don't need help. Hell - we help everyone else's poor. When did we become so self righteous?

I think those that make less ought to get more........... truth is I think if you make 150,000 - you don't need a damn check. I think the refund ought to be the same amount across the board. Course those who feel this is just a crumb can always send their check to me - I know and see many folks that could put it to good use.
