If one single statistic could settle this issue, it is this: 98 percent of all enlisted recruits who enter the military have an education level of high school graduate or higher, compared to the national aver*age of 75 percent.[5] In an education context, rather than attracting underprivileged young Americans, the military seems to be attracting above-average Americans. What remains to explore is whether this pattern of military enlistment is (1) consistent across ZIP codes, (2) consistent across all branches of service, and/or (3) consistent proportionally across all levels of education.

HUH? What you are saying is "you can show all the proof you want I'm just going to still believe what I believe based on my emotions". JW do we put kids in the military from poor families...hell yeah but that's not all the military is made up of. In the last few months we have enlisted a lawyers son w/ 3 years of college, a guy w/ a masters degree, a kid that was a deputy sheriff w/ a 2 yr degree/ another kid who's mom was a lawyer, and a couple of kids that come from a household with a combined income of about 75,000. Those are more the rule than the exception. Why do you feel the military prays off of the poor?

Yes...last year only 90% of our recruits had a High School diploma instead of the 95 - 98% in the past...which is still well above the national average. What is the drop out rate of the high school in the town you live in?

ALso fwiw the midwest produce the highest "quality" of recruits also, followed by the north east, the west and lastly the south. Those stats are based on test scores.

I had to chime in........I see news reports of people that are killed in the conflict and some of them are from wealthy families that could have paid to keep them out (as if we were drafting...) - some of them are wanting to make a difference and believe they can. Who are we to tell them otherwise? Or some just recognize that they need military training. I'm looking to fill 2 positions right now.....I received resumes from 2 people with military training...do you think they found their way to the top of the pile?

We do take people that have committed one low level felony but what they don't report is the process. Say a 17 year old kid gets popped for stealing gas and it's a low level felony and that's all he has. Why not let him enlist if he is otherwise qualified. We are not taking murder's, rapists and sex offenders. The felony waiver process is stringent. They have to go through 2 interviews with officers, submit 3 letters of reccomendation from employers or people they know, go through a complete back ground check and have committed the felony at least 12 months ago. Also they have to show a pattern of good behavior after the crime.

How many felons are hired in the civilian world that have done a lot worse? Our army is NOT full of these people, they are the exception not the rule. You make it sound like the Army is full of felons and thugs.
