Some of the people that join do it for the SERVICE to COUNTRY...it's not always about the money or benefits. I had one kid from college here that played football for DCCC. After his 2 years he enlisted, got a $35,000 bonus, which he said he was just giving it to his mom 'cause he didn't need it...and went to Ahfganistan. He was back visiting the other day and said he LOVES the Army. I also put a friend of his (a girl on a cheerleading scholarship at the college) in the Army. Do these people sound like the worst of society?

On the contary JW...Military people are TAUGHT to think for themselves because they have to make decisions and make them fast..often in life or death situations. IN order to make a decision it requires a thought process that begins with gathering facts and information to make an INFORMED decision and not acting on pure emotion. Soldiers are probably better thinkers, decision makers and leaders than most civilians.

DeBriefing is nothing more than letting you know what is classified and what isn't from your mission and what you can talk about and not. It's not mind erasing or anything like that. You sound somewhat misinformed about this stuff and I'm just trying to help you out with some fact. I'm not biased because I know we take all kinds of people in the army but it's such a small percentage.

I am saying that alot of the military is comprised of underprivileged.

When you can count on one hand ( I counted yours) the more affluent of society...... thats out of how many. I do know that there are kids out there with a sense of responsibility to their nation.

Since 2001, enlistments have increased in the top two-fifths of income levels but have decreased among the lowest fifth.

Did you know that JUST the Army Recruiting Stations in Olathe and Lenexa (Johnson County, wealthiest county in KS by far) accounts for about 140 Army contracts a year. JO CO has a MEDIAN Household income of $63,155. It's one of the top 30 wealthiest counties in the U.S.A. but they put people in the military. While some of those could be from poor families a large percentage of them aren't.

I'd have to go with ya there, Weeze - just out of thought and not supported in any way by fact. Seems that the underprivileged are the ones that recognize that the military training will lift them up from some fairly dire circumstances with the bennies offered. Although there are many professional soldiers, I would venture to say that a lot of the people in harm's way are those that are under educated for other jobs. Hopefully the military training they get prior to shipping out is enough to make them smart soldiers.

Army you know I love the military. But I am sorry each individual does not make their own decisions. That is counterproductive for whole idea of military.
You are told from the get-go.....where you will live, what you will eat, how you will behave, what job you will do etc etc.... its disciplinary and its ok.... It is how it is successful.

Lets face it we need more of a structure in our lives.

I loved it because decisions were made by someone else and my husband did what was layed out for him and didn't have to stress over making a wrong choice.

I am far from being misinformed. I lived it. And I also lived with the trying to adjust to civilian life. Whoaaaaaaaa..... what a culture shock that was.

I guess I will go try to find a un-biased site to break down the numbers ( whew)on the poor and the affluent. Wish me luck....they are all leftwingers.
