Yes and no....We are leaders and followers both. To be a good leader you have to be a good follower. How many people in the civilian world are told what to wear to work, when to eat, what time to do what? You know there is a more discplined, structered environment in the military. It's not really a bad thing. People coming out of the army are typically good at making decisions and thats not becuase they are mindless robots. Again you have to be able to think on your own in order to make those decisions. I'm not going to argue with you. If you think military people are mindless robots that's fine.

I have to make choices every day. (I even get to decide what I eat) There is nothing laid out in front of me. I just have left and right limits I operate under and I take it from there.

We approx*imate each recruit’s household income by using the median household income of his or her hometown ZIP code.

Sense the DOD keeps no track, then any standard can and will be used....

Seems that the underprivileged are the ones that recognize that the military training will lift them up from some fairly dire circumstances with the bennies offered. Although there are many professional soldiers, I would venture to say that a lot of the people in harm's way are those that are under educated for other jobs. Hopefully the military training they get prior to shipping out is enough to make them smart soldiers.

Senate Democrats left two days of legislative business officially open last week, hobbling GOP efforts to bring up a bill punishing a liberal California city for scolding Marine Corps recruiters.

Republicans said Democrats clearly wanted to avoid being forced to choose between the Marine Corps or Berkeley, Calif., known for its liberalism and fervent anti-war positions.

Used and Abused? Come on. NOW you do sound like a Democrat. Used and abused HOW? If you mean used as in sent to fight in a war. Yes, that's what the military uses soldiers for. They KNOW that when they VOLUNTEER. How are they abused? Define what abuse is? If a soldier does a 15 month tour in Iraq, comes home for a year then does another 15 month tour is that abuse? Council members conceded that they had erred in passing a resolution Jan. 29 that condemned the Marines - rather than the war in Iraq - and some council members added that they felt they owed U.S. troops an apology as well the many Berkeley residents who were ashamed and offended by their position.

"To err is human but to really screw up it takes the Berkeley City Council," said council member Gordon Wozniak. "We failed our city. We embarrassed our city."

At 1:30 a.m., after nearly four hours of public comment and debate, the council voted 7-2 to rescind its action two weeks ago directing the city clerk to send a letter to the Marines that they weren't welcome in the city.

In a separate vote, the council decided not to issue a public apology for its action last month....

Berkeley will not send Marines "unwelcome intruders" letter

Check out the protest yesterday. If this happened at an abortion clinic the protesters would have been slammed to the ground, cuffed and hauled off. But Berkley police are remaining neutral by refusing to enforce the law.
