Lost my GI bill and any bennies coming my way because I listened to the VA rep that used to be here (he, I believe, was fired because he was a worthless piece of shit). I was told by the rep that I did not qualify for college benifits because I made too much money working at the beef plant and I did not pay into the GI bill. I believed him and went on my merry way and just worked. Years later, after this douchebag was gone, I found out he lied to me and pretty much every veteran because he was, well, a douchebag and didn't like to do paperwork. I lost my benifits, also was unable to get checked for my disability (for which I am not in the military now) and other things.

All water under the bridge now..........and I learned a valuable lesson to boot.
I am very happy where I am at now in life. All the coulda's, shoulda's and woulda's mean nothing because aint a damn thing I can do about it. I could be mad and get upset......but what does that accomplish? I have: 2 of the greatest kids in the world. I have: my own house, car and luxeries that i enjoy. I have: a damn good paying job. I have: my health. Mostly i have: a woman who I adore and she adores me. Without having all the bumps and curves in the road I traveled I would not be at the destination I am at now.

That reminds me of my Dad’s run-in with the VA. He had hearing loss from being on deck next to the big Navy guns in WWII. He filed paperwork for partial disability on the hearing loss. The VA sent him additional paperwork to file. He sent it in and got more paperwork to file. This went on several times until he got sent the same paperwork that he filed in the first place. He took those forms to the VA, threw them on the guy’s desk and told him to roll them up as tightly as he could and stick them where the sun don’t shine. I imagine a WWII Navy vet had a little more to say then what he repeated to me. Shortly thereafter he started getting his payments without any addition paperwork.

I am also opposed to allowing illegal immigrants to get the same tuition rates as in-state residents, but I'm not sure your budgetary projection here is accurate. A tax expenditure is different in kind than a governmental service discount. For all you and I know, having illegal immigrants put forward the money for in state tuition might be a net budgetary gain, as opposed to charging them out of state rates and having a large number not paying anything because the price tag got too high. So long as the cost to educate them is less than in-state tuition (which it usually is, AFAIK), then it should be a budgetary gain.

That being said, it was one off the few politically poor decisions that Sebelius made here in Kansas. The reasons have more to do with equity and fairness than budgetary concerns (unless we expand the discussion to providing other governmental services for people who reside here illegally).
