MEXICO CITY - Mexico‘s foreign secretary Monday leveled his country‘s sharpest criticism yet at U.S. proposal for a fence along parts of its southern border, condemning it as "stupid" and "underhanded."

"It‘s a law that looks underhanded to everybody ... stupid," Derbez said.

Under the measure, soldiers and police would help stop people sneaking across, and employers would have to check the legal status of their workers.

Reacting Sunday to the bill‘s approval, Mexican President Vicente Fox said "this wall is shameful," and called the plan hypocritical for a country made up of immigrants.

President Bush proposed a new guest worker program with three-year work visas, but lawmakers refused to include the initiative in the immigration bill passed Friday.

Of course President Fox would be against it. His whole economy is based on the amount of money the illegal workers send back to Mexico from the USA!

Fox is like the queen bee sending the workers out to gather pollen to bring back to the hive. Only problem is it doesn't produce much honey.

I agree with Fox - our country IS made up of immagrants - but I think his counrty has taken that to the extreme.... looks like Mexico is trying to regain what Santa Anta lost......... The immagration has always been reserved for people trying to flee repression.......I think the only repression in Mexico is it's own government hiding under a "democratic" sheet....... There are ENOUGH immagrants now........send out the fence builders!!!....and hurry up cause we are being swarmed.........

I agree - the country is composed of immigrants. But they're legal immigrants. It stands to reason that if you have to sneak to do something, that you're probably doing something wrong. If President Fox doesn't want us to build the fence, would he rather we patrolled the area with machine guns? The fence seems a more humane way of allowing only the honest immigrants in than the firing squad, but hey - it's his choice......

I was watching the special on the Mexican Fence, and I can't believe how much they've spent on that darn thing....Not to mention, that the Mexicans now just cross at different locations...I saw where they would transport them to a location, give each of them two gallons of water, and send them accross the barb wire fence into the US....
