I gotcha. And therein lies the problem. Do we need to have another attack on American soil for our leaders to get serious about immigration issues? I'm not asking for the borders to be closed, because that's unrealistic. I do ask, though, that people aren't allowed in willy-nilly.

The situation has grown from a minor problem into a major malfunction along with 9-11 changing our priorities. We need to finally start doing what we should have been doing all along.

Really I think this illegal immigrant issue will never be addressed as it needs to be. All we are seeing is a few half hearted scraps thrown out to make it look good. Politicians know they are cutting their own life line by aggressively speaking out against illegals.

I think the article in todays paper sums it up pretty well.

"Hispanic voters voice support for Democratic presidential candidates"

"Mayorga said her favorite presidential candidate is Illinois Sen. Barack Obama."

"Because I guess, due to his African American roots, he can understand well the Latino community concerns," she said.

So she will vote for him because he's black, and she thinks because he's black, he will better serve the Hispanics. OK, perfect example as to why America is screwed up. Now that Hispanic numbers influence the elections, no sane politician is about to turn their vote against them.

I wonder why our leaders won't enact what their voters ask for?

They are, it's just that voter demographics has changed.

According to the Globe poll the illegal immigration issue is paramount here in Dodge yet our city commissioners REFUSE to take any type of action on it despite emails and phone calls enmasse from their constituents.

Sure we did. We (our gov't that refuse's to represent us on immigration) let it happen and now that it has grown to epic portions it's time to stop the gravy train.

I agree with HWY that 9/11 had a lot to do with it. The fact that you have criminal aliens marching in America's streets carrying mexican flags and demanding rights doesn't help their cause either.

Attrition through enforcement is really the only option if we want to solve our illegal immigratioin problem.Implementing such a policy will save the taxpayers money,help Americans workers at the bottom of the labor market and restore the rule of law.

I believe that is what we will end up with but they need to get legal and they need to do some assimilation exercises. By damn if you are going to stay here be a part of HERE............. other than that Zibbie - I say carry on cause it sure seems to be what's on the horizon. It also seems to be the only realistic workable solution at this point. I hope we as a nation have learned a good lesson from this.

Attrition through enforcement....very good. It's working in Oklahoma. The KS legislature is toying with immigration enforcement laws but it will be interesting to see if our Gov. veto's any law that toughens our stance on immigration.

If the immigration laws being discussed pass and become law I wonder if they will enforce those laws in Dodge or if it will be business as usual here. We should pay special attention to this because it could affect us more than most other cities in KS given our high illegal population.
