This is Mark Vierthaler with the Dodge City Daily Globe. Searching through your archives, I noticed there has been the occasional criticism of the Dodge City Police Department not doing enough to target illegal immigrants within the area.

I was hoping someone might be willing to be a source for a story, covering said topic.

To be viable, you must be willing to have your full name and age printed in the Daily Globe. We're looking for reasonable, well thought out opinions on what sort of job you feel the police should be doing, as well as any legitimate suggestions you may have on how they can improve their service in this regard.

Welcome to DodgeBoard Mark. I'm just going to toss out some thoughts here and see if someone wants to contribute.

Personally, I don't see much the local PD can do as far as illegal immigrants. Now thats not to say I don't think they should, but that their hands are pretty much tied.

Now what I'd like to see is the local PD able to use some type of E-Verify when they find, no valid tag, no insurance or any minor infraction. The problem as I see it is even if they were able to find the illegals and report them, whats going to be done? Nothing, because our government doesn't have the resources to deport the number of people just in southwest Kansas much less the nation.

This is why I think the only workable cure is to make the illegals want to go home on their own. Not impossible, just not likely given that people are making too much money off them to let that happen.

I also feel at this point, because we've waited too long to act, many of the illegals have illegal documentation by now. Telling who is illegal and who isn't is going to be next to impossible. Only the really stupid ones don't have documentation by now, but it's a start.

Hola Mark,
Although we would like the PD to DO more I'm sure most of them follow the guidelines set forth by the fathers of the city. The police only follow the rules. The enforcement should be traced back to the commissioners and THEIR policies towards immigration. The PD is just a tool of the city for enforcement. What you should write an article on is WHY the commissioners REFUSE to enforce immigration laws in Dodge which would make our streets safer for your family and mine. Let them go on record talking about how concerned they are that some illegal might miss a couple of days of work because they are sitting in jail.

I think our police do a good job with what they have to work with.

Garden City has taken the lead with implementing tougher laws on those driving w/o a license. Dodge commissioners refuse to do that. We know that some of these people w/o license's are illegal but out commissioners don't want to do anything about it regardless of how a majority of the tax paying citizens feel.
