Coyotes in Leawood!

Have any of you seen the news stories about adult coyotes roaming the streets in Leawood? I watched a bit of the city council meeting tonite. Now coyotes have killed 6 pets and injured several others. But one woman stood up with tears in her voice and begged the council not to trap the coyotes and move them to a more suitable location.

We've seen deer in the trails by our house and stupid geese crap all over the sidewalks at times. But I don't think a coyote would be welcome in my yard. I'd probably have to ask hubby to load the gun for that. My suggestion would be to allow trained animal control officers to shoot the animals with tranquilizers and move them before they attack and possibly kill a youngster that happens to go out after Dad's paper in the morning. I swear. Does nobody have any good sense? Why would somebody pay upwards of 3/4 of a million dollars for a house and be afraid to go outside between dusk and dawn?

Coyotes are like cockroaches, they will be here forever. They adapt to environmental conditions very readily, and have moved into the suburbs and cities as well. They are very good at killing small pets like cats and small dogs. In addition, they can, in packs, take down larger animals. In addition, they can transmit diseases and sickness to pets. In our area, mange has taken over a lot of the coyote population. This is transmittable to dogs. Also, rabies, distemper, and related problems. Coyotes also are territorial, in that they will kill other animals within their "territory". One example is their extreme hatred of foxes. You will note that most fox sightings are within town, as the coyotes kill them in the rural areas. In the country, they can kill calves, chickens, lambs, and other domestic animals. They are a very smart animal, and learn very quickly. Being a "country dweller" I have had numerous run-ins with coyotes, and I have hunted them many times in order to control a population. However, they seem to bounce back very quickly. I have only seen them "attack/bite" a human maybe a couple of times, as they are normally very afraid of humans. However, as they advance into the towns and suburbs, they get less and less afraid of humans.

There are two things that I know of that make coyotes brave toward humans.
One is hunger. The hungrier they get the braver they get. Keeping small pets outside will protect your children a little.

The other is familiarity. Once they get used to being around people and realize that these city dwellers are not threatening them, the kids start looking mighty tasty.

We have coyotes in L.A. even. They come down from the mountains when they are hungry. I always hate it when I see lost pet signs next to the coyote sighting signs. The irony kinda makes me giggle but surely wouldn't if it were my pet on the lost sign.

Oh no you wouldn't want to trap them and move them.

Not when shooting them is so much more fun!

You know.... I have to agree with Wordy on this one, well not the fun part, but if it's between the coyote and my kids screw the trap I'm going for a gun. They're not an endangered species, so it won't hurt to kill a few off for the safety of the children.

357, I guarantee you that you will not make them an endangered species, no matter how many you kill. They have a way of rebounding like you wouldn't believe. As I said before, I have hunted them off and on for years to try and control the population. You can kill a hundred of them in a certain area now, and by next year there will be two hundred of them! Coyotes and cockroaches will rule the world someday!!

I'd be the leader of organizing a hunting team to kill as many as possible, but I wouldn't want anybody shooting in my neighborhood, so it would be hard for me to imagine shooting in any other neighborhood. Again, there are little ones to think about...
