Indeed they do. When I worked at Excel I was the only one in my department who wasn't in the Union because of stuff like that.

But back in the day, I'm talking 40's or 50's here, companies gave a damn if their workers could eat and pay the mortgage. Now they care if you show up on time, do your best to make them as much money as possible and then pay you the very least amount they can.

If you cut too far into their profits by wanting enough to live on then they take your job completely and move over seas.

Don't kid yourself.......if businesses could get away with paying you less, they would.

And if workers could get away with getting more money for less work they would.

If you're pro corporation you're and idiot just as much an idiot as someone who is pro union.

Each will take care of their own interests and put the individual second no matter what.

Yes at one time unions were highly relevant to the needs of the workers in America, and even today there are cases were unionizations help occasionally against the big corporations.. However now many functions that the unions used to do are handled by the US Govt(work safety, wage laws, etc). Unions today care only about one thing, their own personal greed. When companies like GM have gardeners they are paying 60,000 a year because they can't fire them even if the employee is at fault then you have massive problems. Thanks to unions GM may not even have the money in the future to even pay the billions and billions in pensions that autoworkers will receive, they get better pay and benefits for being uneducated workers than I do as a microbiologist.

most of the people at the GSA office where Hubby works are union. Makes it impossible to get rid of the bad ones or even require appropriate work for pay. I still say, good ol' supply and demand. If the companies demand a better worker, they'll pay for it and not accept anybody less. If I can't get a job because I'm lazy and inexperienced, then I will either accept something less or clean up my act.

Wouldn't that be great?

If that were remotely true then you wouldn't see so many people getting canned a couple of years before they get their pension and replaced with someone younger who will work for less.

You have a point, but those are the types of companies that DESERVE to be taken advantage of by unions.
