Thumbs down 400% tax on cigarettes

I saw on the news this morning that California is looking at a 400% tax on cigarettes making a pack almost $7. This has got to be one of the stupidest things I've seen yet. Don't they teach history any more?

Tobacco is probably the oldest luxury in human history. They can't possibly think raising the cost is going to make people quit. Whats going to happen is the same thing that happened when they taxed tea and made alcohol illegal. Smokers will simply buy from the black market and revenue will be lost.

Maybe they ought to put a tax on each can of Pepsi/Coke and each Mickey D's quarterpounder w/ cheese! Or how about more taxes on fuel, or how about on air and water!!

Or how about another "Boston Tea Party"!!!

There’s probably more fruitcakes than smokers out there for sure.

No, they just fume. Detector has it right about the effects of this. It will create another source of illegal activity. The people that come up with this stuff hate smokers so much that they lose all sense of reason.

Yeah - just funnin' with ya. I know this is a touchy subject ...

I thought it was no taxation without representation. So if it passes, does that mean that the smokers are in the minority? Naaaa- I think the legislators that do smoke can afford the taxes and aren't worried a bit.

How about Dodge City getting a fee for every time they use "Get the hell out of Dodge" in a movie or tv show. That alone would pay for boothill.
