2.5 Million Gallons of Unleaded up in smoke

www.kansascity.com | 06/03/2008 | Lightning touches off fuel tank blaze

This link should take you to the article in the KC Star. I'm watching it live on TV. Phenomenal. The tank is so hot it's glowing. Talking about shutting down the downtown airport....cutting off air traffic in the area because of the smoke. Going straight up - no wind, even though we had quite a storm (that caused the fire in the first place). Wow.

As the fire burns (out of control), the tank is actually melting. You can see it glow. Unbelievable. Wordy - can you see it over there?

Lightning also hit a grocery store and it has burned. A roof on an apartment building (flat roof) collapsed due to the weight of the water. Holy cow. Some news night!

How'd they get the 2.5 million gallons into a 100,000 gallon tank?

    New math??

There was a very powerful storm that hit Manhattan, KS on Monday morning just before noon. We, my nephew and I, pulled into Manhattan just aqt noon and ran into heavy rain and saw other cars coming in the other lane that had thier windshields demolished some even had big gaping holes in the windshield. Saw one car pulled onto the center median that had the sunroof broken out of it. Talked to somebody here later that said there was hail just under baseball size. Sure glad I missed it!!

I don't know how that works! I've heard both sizes, although the 2.5 Mil size is the one I've heard on 2 stations up here. If you can get a picture, it's pretty fantastic. The tank is just melting around the fire. They think it's going to burn itself out as the tank falls in with no other damage or any loss of life. As if the loss of fuel alone isn't enough damage!

The amount I'm hearing now is 1.2 million gallons. I don't think anybody really knows for sure. It sure is something to watch.

Wow, Bubba - I heard there was a storm, but didn't know it was THAT bad. I didn't hear of a bunch of claims called in, but we aren't heavily saturated in the Manhattan area, neither commercial or personal and we don't do that much auto. What a mess this month has started out to be!

How did lightening start that fire, Muffie? Those tanks should have been grounded properly to avoid that situation? I suppose the gas price will jump up 20 cents a gallon now, due to the shortage created by the fire!!

Conspiracy Theory: Lightning storm in area->opportunity to show decrease in supply, even with decreased gas usage.

Last night, when it was happening, Fox 4 news was saying it was about half full, with 58000 gallons.
