(1) First of all, not one of you has yet explained to me why the rest of the civilised world does not share your views about their citizens carrying/having guns - it seems that only Americans are obsessed with the need to have them. Is the US more fearful, more obsessive, more paranoid than the rest of us?

(2) If you live in a free open democratic society why can't you trust your own government - again, not one of you has adequately explained this mistrust, yet many of you support this same government fighting its war to export your kind of "democracy" to other countries. Odd!

I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Primarily for self defense, Binky, although a periodic snake or coyote does pop up.

The antiquated response of - "it's written into our constitution", is a pretty good reason, though.

ummmm....sure that sounds delightful. So does 50 cent oil, peace between nations, bipartisanship, racial equality, equal opportunity, fair taxes, and sitting down with you for a couple verses of Kum-ba-ya. But let's get real here. There are guns in every nation, even in Britain. Criminals will have them no matter what laws you enact. The gun-rights movement in our country seeks to allow the law-abiding citizens to complete a lengthy course and evaluation to get licensed to carry a concealed weapon to protect themselves. Less than 1% even seek the right to carry. With the criminals, the percent is much higher.

Personally, I like the idea of the good guys having more guns and being more prevalent, than the bad guys- but hey, that's just me.



They don't prevail here either, in respect to gun carrying being the "norm". Like I said, less than one percent actually seek the permit to carry and of those, many don't actually carry a weapon much of the time. What does prevail, as a result of what the Brits did to us many many years ago...is the premise that the government cannot be trusted to have overwhelming power over the people, and with that the right to carry by a law abiding citizen has been preserved.

Despite your attempt to classify the U.S. as uncivilized, it's not the picture you envision as shown on the old west movies. We don't have a bunch of people carrying, as you might think.

It was the Brits that made us the way we are, with respect to gun laws. I'm pretty sure you know the story.

We trust them better knowing that they know their countrymen are armed.

binky,i am a member of a forum of uk wildfowlers and they certainly don't hold your views of guns and personal protection. most of them have more guns than i can afford. i just have one type of gun they can't have in their home, Pistols. we belive in the right to defend our selves and our families. i hope you never have to face the situation where you are confronted a criminal with a weapon. I don't feel your whole country shares your view of guns. in fact at one time it was required of all free britians to own firearms. our goverment works because we have the power to change it by whatever means necessary.
Plus how do know people in those countries woudn't carry guns if they could.

The only answer that counts is the one that Bink agrees with.

I answered him twice; to keep government from having too much power over the citizens, and to allow the law abiding to protect themselves against the criminals. Those answers never counted because they didn't coincide with his point. His point being that... he, and the other Brits, are superior or more evolved than us uncivilized beings in the U.S.

Thanks for the link Justoo. The comments section is interesting. Here’s a few select ones. (Select means I cherry picked them and it’s a one sided representation.) I intentionally skipped comments from our uncivilized country and focused on the civilized countries. :D

I blame the 'do gooders' for the beakdown of law and order in our society - there is too much emphasis on the rights of the law breakers. I say that if you commit a crime then the rights of the victim should be paramount and those of the lawbreaker secondary or non-existant.

Why are police officers here in the UK frequently unarmed??? How are they supposed to defend themselves or the public against violent criminals who have weapons if they have no weapons themselves? Something is seriously wrong with that.

I am a former member of the Police who wore a firearm for years while patrolling a large city dealing with teenage gangs, and never used it once. We usually patrolled in pairs and the confidence and respect that awareness of those firearms and our known professional ability gave us was palpable.
