So these were my two questions which still have not been answered:

The only answer I can see that has been given to question (1) is from Booger who considers "the rest of the civilised world" is screwed up. Well, that's good to know Booger! But that intellectual response hardly answers the question .....

I have yet to see any answer to question (2).

I have seen plenty of responses which can best be summarised as: "We need guns for self-defence and because its in our Constitution". Oh, and because we don't trust our government! See my question (1).

Tee, please don't misconstrue my words, I don't only accept those answers that match my views! In any discussion you expect, and in fact require, differing views to be expressed, some you may agree with, others you don't, otherwise all you get is a rant or a diatribe.

Justoo posted a link with a story from The Times. If the Police had shot those involved they would have probably ended up in court facing manslaughter or murder charges!

Highwayman simply went fishing for some quotes to support his case, a bit of a lazy response if I may say so, we can all do that but what is the point?

No one commented about the fact that we took the guns out of Northern Ireland and helped its society get back to a more normal civilised way of life - without guns and all the death & misery they caused!

But I see that your courts have ruled in favour, so that seems that, but I still disagree with it, but its your country .....

Had those police been carrying sidearms, they may have garnered sufficient respect that it would have been unnecessary to shoot anyone. They may have also been able to hug their wives when they got home that night.

I'm not sure what the big "tadoo" is all about. In the USA, the CRIMINALS will always have weapons. Without a "Defense" against this, I am a sitting duck. I have been robbed in the past, before I carried any DEFENSE. Since I have a DEFENSE with me anymore, I never have a problem with criminals!

As for the second part, do you think that the Iraqis trusted their government? How about the many African nations? How about Cuba? Mexico? Guatamala? Columbia? etc, etc, etc? Without an armed citizenship, the government tends to take advantage of the citizens at times. No one is going to take away my guns! I am a law abiding citizen, and I will stay that way. Simple case: If you were going to "screw" with someone, would you take an unarmed man or an armed one??

I note your list of countries, but you made no reference to France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Norway etc? These are countries more like the USA than those you quote.

Why this paranoia about your government? You live in a modern democratic civilised society so why the fear and anxiety? I am truly perplexed.

Probably because most of us uncivilized folks are not so arrogant as to assume we understand the thinking of those civilized folks. Of course Germany has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world and the Swiss are well known for keeping full auto assault weapons at home. I’m not so sure that most of Europe shares your extreme views on gun probation. Or it could be they read too many agenda driven propaganda sites like the one you offered a link to.

As for obsessed or paranoid, it might just be that we’re simply smarter and on the right track. (At least most of us.) It doesn’t take much looking to find plenty of sources like this one that show your crime rates are going up while ours is going down.

Most folks here and abroad don’t trust politicians any farther than one could throw a politician with two broken arms and a bad back. History shows us that oppressive rulers disarm the population so it’s easier to control them. Our founders knew this and sought to protect us accordingly. You don’t wait until you have a government that you can’t trust to arm yourself. By then it’s too late.

"Respect" doesn't come from the barrel of a gun, it comes from the moral values of a society where goodness triumph's over evil. An example of this can be seen in Northern Ireland where for years people were being shot until dialogue and common sense prevailed.

European legislators back tough gun control rules

BRUSSELS: Against the backdrop of deadly school shootings in Finland and Germany, European Union legislators Thursday overwhelmingly backed tough new gun control rules they said they hoped would prevent Europe from becoming a gun-friendly culture like the United States.

Under the new rules, hammered out in 18 months of negotiations between the European Parliament, national governments and gun advocates, individuals age 18 and over will be able to buy and own a firearm, provided they are not deemed a threat to public safety. Individuals under 18 will only be able to obtain a gun for hunting or target shooting under the supervision of a licensed adult.

To plug holes in the current system, in which the registration of guns is not consistent across the 27-member bloc, each member state will be obliged to set up a computerized database of firearms, including details about their model, caliber, serial number and the names and addresses of both the seller and the buyer. The data must be kept by authorities for at least 20 years.

European legislators of all political stripes said the new rules were essential to prevent Europe from embracing the gun culture of the United States, where the right to bear arms is written in the constitution.

"We in Europe have a different culture than in the United States and we do not consider the freedom to buys weapons a human right," said Gisela Kallenbach, a German member of the European Parliament from the Green group, who helped draft the proposed law. "All European cows are registered Europe-wide, so why not guns, if it can save lives? Civil liberties can be sacrificed if we can prevent people from being killed."
