| I can see how the rep would intimidate a newer member to the board. I do have a rep rating of 21, for now, but I have been here since day 1 of the board. I would also like to join lurker and encourage more new members to post, don't be shy...that's what this board is for, to throw out ideas and concerns and discuss them. As far as the rep thing goes...If you don't like my point of view, let's discuss it on the board. One of four things will happen, You will change my views, I will change your views, we will meet somewhere in the middle, or we will agree to disagree. I know that I can be wrong....Hey, it's happened before, I'm sure it will be more than likely to happen again. But you won't change my viewpoint by giving me negative rep. You may, however, change my views with a good discussion based on facts and reasoning.

| Bah! I've gotten 2 negative rep's so far. It doesn't hurt that bad.

My point is to try to get the people that leave the negative rep to instead post their dislikes on the public board for debate. Give me a reason to change my mind and/or ways. If you convince me to change then good for you. If I convince you that your way of thinking leaves a little to be desired, then good for me. If we agree to disagree, then so be it. I'm very open to all kinds of ideas and viewpoints on a variety of subjects, I'm sure some will agree with me sometimes and some will disagree with me sometimes. I guarantee that leaving unsigned negative rep will not help me change my mind at all.

Again I say, show some courage and sign your rep! Better yet tell me on the board what you don't like and we can discuss it! Now I will make a plea to all Dodgeboard members that read this. Everybody please click on the rep Icon and give me negative (disapprove) reputation. I could care less where I stand on the rep scale. If my rep is lowered enough maybe more of the unsigned rep givers will feel less intimidated by me for whatever reason they might be intimidated in the first place.

| But.....we wanna be careful about neg rep, Bubba - at the get-go, Admin told us that too much neg rep could get us banned......We'd miss ya!!!!!

| I think that you have to get a rep below 0 to get banned. Right now I am above 900. My point is that to me rep isn't going to change anybody's mind about anything. That can only be done by dicussing a topic and sharing viewpoints to convince somebody that the way they are thinking might not be right. edited-addition When the board first started, I did care about the rep. I wanted to be a respected member of this little online community. But, now as I have been here awile, I know how most of you think of me without needing the rep to back it up. The relationships that I have buit with the posts that I and others have made mean more than how many little green squares I have. What do the rest of you think? Would getting rid of the reputation encourage more participation from the newer members so they don't feel intimidated by those of us that have been here from the beginning and have our rep buit up to pretty high levels? Maybe, if enough of us are in agreement, we could get admin to disable the rep. Just a thought.

| Allow me to walk the fence here. First off I really don't care how many green squares I or anyone has. But it has been my experience that there is a plus side to the rep system at least for me. My posts, as you well know, are often controversial and I get the feeling some posters agree, but are afraid to publicly make it known. I often get positive anonymous reps from people that agree but care not to do it in a post or put their moniker behind it. I think the rep system, or at least the user notification end, does serve a good purpose. It tells me I'm not as alone in my thoughts as the thread response might indicate. Personally, I would think the high reputation numbers would do more to encourage new posters than discourage them. But hey! you know me

| I agree. I would think the new posters would see by the rep points compared to the number of posts that the original users aren't ogres. Anyway, hopefully they see that! We're just a bunch of people that don't always agree, but disagree civilly. I've only seen one or two slap-downs so far.....they were very deserving of being slapped-down, IMHO.
