Mouse Thrown Into Fire Sets Home Ablaze

FORT SUMNER, N.M. (AP) - A mouse got its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves. The blazing creature ran back to the man's house and set it on fire.

Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it.

"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mares said from a motel room Saturday.

Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran to just beneath a window, and the flames spread up from there and throughout the house.

No was hurt inside, but the home and everything in it was destroyed.

Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks.

"I've seen numerous house fires," village Fire Department Capt. Jim Lyssy said, "but nothing as unique as this one."

A friend of mine who works for the county did something similar a few years ago. He was burning a pile of brush, and caught a squirrel on fire. The squirrel jumped a creek and set half of the county on fire. Have also heard about it being done with rabbits. However, these were all "accidental"!

I've always heard that the best sound a mouse makes, is when it creates the "SNAP" of a mouse trap as it's trying to steal the bait.... Sad about the gentleman's home. Mice can be a terrible nuisance, not to mention all of the diseases they can potentially pass on. Of course you could always machine-gun them...

Doncha feel just an itty bitty bit sorry for the poor old man? He was just tryin' to get the stinking mouse!!! Hate the little ba$tard$ myself - all they do is spread disease and dirt. And scare me. Don't like spiders, either. They scare me too. Make me look stupid running through the house jumpin' on furniture 'n' stuff.

The absolute bestest bait for those snap traps is a small Tootsie Roll. Just shove it onto the curved portion of the bait thingie and wait for them to giveup trying to lick it off like they do with peanut butter.... They can't resist taking a bite out of it.
