Maybe. I just ain’t going to judge a guy based on a short article in the news.

I remember some guy back when I was getting divorced made the news because he owed $30,000 in back support. My lawyer was talking about it and the ex-wife had dumped the kids on Dad and left the country with her boyfriend. The guy screwed up because he didn’t petition the court to change the orders. A couple of years later when things didn’t work out with the new boyfriend the ex showed up demanding her child support. He got labeled a deadbeat in the news and the rest of the story didn’t get reported in the media.

There’s a lot of crap that goes on and because of publicly about a few outrageous cases most decent guys go into court with two strikes against them. Stories like the one posted get folks riled up and honest guys like LG and me get to pay extra for it.

There is a limit to child support - can't be more than 23 or 25% last I heard. I never collected anything for my youngest and never did look for welfare. I always worked. Never had more than I could afford to raise on my own..... that kept me to 2.

Now ANY dad ought to know that visitation has nothing, nothing, nothing to do with wether they pay child support or not. You can have your X put in jail if she refuses to allow your visit. When it's your turn you just go to PD and tell them you need assist to pick up child. Take a copy of your court order. The kids will be turned over or you can file contempt of court. Trust me I tried that one time - not a smart move. Ya gotta leave your personal feelings out of visitation or you will land up in front of a judge......

I agree that a father should pay child support and take care of his responsibilities, but I also agree that the courts sometimes go to far in how much they order paid. It's almost rediculous sometimes.

25% is riciculous???? How much do ya think it costs to be responsible for a child?........ if ya make $2000 - do ya really thing $500 a month for more than one child is too much? I think where ya'll get screwed is you pay 25%, then ya get spousal support, then ya gotta carry the insurance, then ya gotta pay 1/2 of any out of pocket added expenses...........

OK - now I'm sorry I stirred up this hornet's nest. Several of us are in the same boat, having practically raised more than one completely on our own with no $$$ help from the estranged parent. But this story, if it's true, goes much, much further than that. Some guys (not all of them) and some women, too (but not all of them) will do almost anything to get out of their responsibilities toward their children. It's wrong, no matter whether the court says you are to pay $$$ each month or not. No matter whether you see the kids on a regular basis or not. A deadbeat parent, no matter how they try to get out of child support ought to be tied naked to a tree and given 50 or so lashes with a leather whip for each child they've neglected.

Agreed and I know if you have had bad experiences I hope this doesn't offend, but sometimes it gets to the point where a father who is trying his hardest to pay his child support can't even make it on his own. But I think the main point of the child is sometimes forgotten(I said sometimes) in these cases. It become more about the money than the well being of a child. For what that man did to his children making them think he was dead yes he should receive some lashes or worse.

Like my lawyer told me, there’s never enough money to go around in a divorce. Most of the time the folks are short on money to begin with and when they split up they’re trying to pay for two households when they couldn’t make ends meet with one. Whatever the support amount is, it’s not enough for the parent with the kids and too much for the one paying it. Often Dad has to take a second or even a third job to make ends meet and no time left to be a Dad. Then he gets badmouthed for neglecting the kids. And way too many times Mom is pissing away the money partying and neglecting the kids as well.

Ya’ll want to think this guy is a jerk for playing dead and he probably is. But the wife wanted him out of her life and she got that. The worst case scenario I can think of is the guy going off the deep end, coming back and murdering the wife and kids and then committing suicide. Disappearing and playing dead isn’t the worst thing someone could do.
