GERMANTOWN, Md. — A 7-year-old girl was wounded early Tuesday at a day care center in Germantown, Md., when a gun brought in by another child accidentally went off, police said.

An 8-year-old boy who also goes to For Kids We Care in the suburban community north of Washington had the gun in a backpack. The boy was playing with the gun when it accidentally went off while still in the backpack, police said.

The girl, who was struck in the arm, was taken to Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., Montgomery County police spokesman Derek Baliles said. Her injury was not considered life-threatening.

There were six children in the center at the time of the shooting, which occurred just about before 7 a.m. No one else was hurt.

Police said they do not know where the child got the gun.

Both children are from Germantown. Police did not release their names.

For Kids We Care Inc. operates two "medium-sized" day care centers in Germantown for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, according to its Web site.

How the hell did a child get a gun in his backpack unnoticed? Again, where were the parents? Did somebody handling the backpack (mom or dad?) even think that maybe it was a little heavier than normal? Or maybe it was normal for him to carry the gun. Wow. If I were the day care center owner, that day would be the last for that kid at my day care.

What are they going to have to do install metal detectors at daycare centers? I think some parents need to attend gun safety programs.

I heard on the evening news that the boy got the gun from his dad’s closet. Dad is a convicted felon and is being charged for illegal possession of a firearm.

And we were told that the Brady Background Checks were keeping guns out of the hands of felons. Something tells me that dad wouldn’t have put a trigger lock on even if that was the law too.

Me, too. How sad and what an incredible waste. These kids are too young to make smart decisions - too bad he's saddled with an idiot for a father.

I gotta disagree here. There may be a lot of violence and such on the tv these days, but you can't put something like this on too much tv. The blame lies solely on the parents and nobody else. Even if he did watch something he shouldn't have on tv, the parents allowed it. My children watch tv as much as any kid, I just make sure that what they are watching is appropriate and anything they don't understand or take out of context I explain to them the truth.
