Baby found floating in bag in lake

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- A baby girl remained hospitalized in good condition Sunday after being thrown into a lake in Brazilian park wrapped inside a plastic bag, doctors said.

The baby, apparently 2 months old, was rescued Saturday afternoon by a couple who heard her crying in the Pampulha Lagoon in Belo Horizonte, a city about 500 kilometers (300 miles) northeast of Sao Paulo.

Amateur footage broadcast on Brazilian TV showed rescuers using a long tree branch to pull the black plastic bag out of the water. They opened the bag and found the girl -- wearing a pink dress -- soaked inside.

"I heard what sounded like a cat," Jose da Cruz told Globo TV. "Then the noise was increasing and it caught my attention."

A small wooden board inside the bag apparently kept it from submerging.

"She is in good condition," Dr. Claudia Guimaraes said. "It's a miracle she survived the heat and somehow didn't drown."

Authorities had no leads on why the baby was thrown in the lagoon.

The Pampulha Lagoon is in downtown Belo Horizonte, in one of the city's most famous parks, often crowded with weekend visitors.

Maybe the baby interferred with mom goin to the topless beach....... what a sad story. Either that or she got the Moses story all screwed up!!

I'll go there with ya. They found the mother and she says she gave the baby to some homeless people because she couldn't afford to raise it. Huh? I just don't get that! If you're too poor or otherwise feel unable to raise the child, what makes you think a homeless person can? I'm glad they found the baby alive and seemingly unhurt. I hope the mother doesn't get a second chance now.

I'm with you KCM her story sounds kinda strange to me and she has used all of her chances up.

Hell she just probably sold her child to someone for a "score". They will put her in rehab and she'll be hailed as a sucess story. Pictures will be taken of her and her baby as the poster children for "rehab"......... that's what would happen in the US............ Now in Brazil........ I'm not sure.

Saw it on our news tonite. Heartbreaking that this has to happen, but a miracle in that she's alive and seemingly well.
