I don't know a thing about the program in GB, but I have heard some people discuss the one they have in Canada. Most of those people were not happy with the Canadian program at all!

I have family who has used the system in Canada with very little complaint. The point is, a National Healthcare system CAN work, as pointed out by Binky. Some "die hards" simply don't want to believe it.

What I was told JMom, is that it was a long drawn out affair to get a surgery, or certain treatments, etc, because there was such a long "waiting list" and only so many Doctors available. One person even said they knew someone that "passed away" waiting for an appointment for the life saving surgery!

I believe that I saw a NEWS program on the Canadian Program also. They were interviewing various Canadians about their thoughts. Like 60 Minutes or Primetime, or one of those awhile back.

I've heard American's talk about the inavailablity of services, waiting times, etc. in the Canadian Healthcare System. All I know is, my family, who live in Canada and who are dependant upon their healthcare system have not experienced these issues. Maybe they are just lucky, or maybe the shortages, wait times, etc. are just greatly exaggerated by folks who really don't know what they are talking about.

I needed a hysterectomy when I was 23 years old. Talk about a long, drawn out process.....my physician fought with my insurance company for over a year in order to get them to approve that surgery for me. My doctor was forced to perform all kinds of additional tests, biopsies, etc. before Insurance finally agreed to the surgery, all the time I'm in excruciating pain and I've missed a ton of work, almost lost my job.

Wait times don't just happen in a National Healthcare System.

Smokers, heavy drinkers, the obese and the elderly should be barred from receiving some operations, according to doctors, with most saying the health service cannot afford to provide free care to everyone.About one in 10 hospitals already deny some surgery to obese patients and smokers, with restrictions most common in hospitals battling debt.

Among the survey of 870 family and hospital doctors, almost 60 per cent said the NHS could not provide full healthcare to everyone and that some individuals should pay for services.

The survey found that medical professionals wanted to go much further in denying care to patients who do not look after their bodies.

This means if the gov't deems that you don't have a "healthy" lifestyle then they will not treat you. Wow....see, when you have something provided by the gov't then they start implementing ways to control your life.

My take...

I'm sure Binky's social healthcare system works great. Who doesn't want "free healthcare". A lot of people on here complain about taxes...I'm one of them. Look at some of the tax rates in Britain.

Britain has what is called a VAT or Value Added Tax which is a 17.5% tax on consumer goods and services. (some goods and services are excluded from this tax) This is basically a tax on consumer spending.

There is also the an array of other taxes.

I feel that if something is totally free then everyone will take advantage of the system for even the smallest illness. We don't have enough doctors and facilities as it is...however would we manage this? Americans already complained about having to wait 2 or 3 hours in the waiting room. What would be the fix for this? Hire more doctors? Binky, do you have a DR shortage in Britain?

OUr system pretty much sucks but we DO have some of the best healthcare in the world....people that can afford it come HERE to have major surgeries done. They don't go to Cuba or Canada...

FURTHERmore Binky I do feel that we as able bodied tax paying citizens DO have a responsibility to help the elderly, disabled, mentally ill and such. BUT how much responsibility do we have to pay for the healthcare of a perfectly fit human being that chooses to not contribute to society?
