All European and Scandinavian countries have such national healthcare schemes, its part of our culture and our commitment to look after those within our societies who are sick, elderly, vunerable and in need. As the saying goes, "there is no such thing as a free lunch", and of course we pay for it through taxes. There are private health insurance schemes that are also available for those who wish to pay into them. Quote:
It is probably fair to say that the US has overall a lower tax regime than Europe. I spent last Christmas/New Year in Denver with my daughter who lives there and I have to say supermarkets and restuarants are much cheaper than in the UK - no wonder you Americans eat out so often! Mind you we don't have to give a 20% tip in restuarants, although its fair to say I don't mind tipping in the US as the service is usually of a much higher standard than in the UK. I don't think the British understand the concept of good customer service! I was in New York a few weeks ago and even though its a major city, bustling and hectic, customer service there is also very good, and prices for most things are cheaper - I bought an iPod and a camera, and saved ££££'s! | Are you kidding? We have the best FREE health care in the world. It's called the ER. Just ask our newcomers. They have it down to a science. You need no appointment, it's open 24/7, you get free drugs and it's no questions asked thanks to our government. All bills are paid by the rest of us.

| The Emergency Service provides free care to anyone? Are you saying that people use that as a back door to free medical care?

| If you came to America by legal channels you didnt recieve the "immigrants bible" to living in America for free also known as "Your Host & You a Tics guide to living large in America off others" This is a pamplet published by the packing plants and distributed at the boarder with a map to dodge city in the back. Yes the ER clinic is free to anyone with the balls to lie about who they are. The ER can not refuse service to any one. You can drive to your local ER with a cold give you name as MyMadeUpName address of ACityThatDoesntExist and a SS# of 999-99-9999 and you will be treated. The bill is passed on to those stupid enough to use their real identity. The ER by law is not allowed to check the information of any person coming to the ER Like those parking places reserved for "expecting mothers" if you know they cant enforce it its only the stupid people that dont use them |

| You might call it the honor system. I think it stems from complaints that people were receiving service based on their ability to pay for said service. Hum, imagine that! Anyway, so the government says the ER cannot check the status of a visitors ability to pay their bill. This includes name, address or legal status. So those who care nothing for honor give bogus names, addresses and many don't even bother with a SS# knowing they can't be billed for the visit. Those of us with honor pick up the tab. Thats why our health care costs so much.
