My idea is that some of the people we label "poor" or "working poor" in our country are poor by definition but not in such a situation as what we are lead to believe. When we hear poor we think of some guy laying out on the street covered in paper. If you tell me someone is poor and they have more dvd players than I do, better cable or more cars then I have a hard time thinking that I need to reach out and help them.

I'm not poor (close to it) but there are times when I have done without things like cable or eating out as much in order to save more money for things I want or need.

Some people just like to live in denial. They deny that Iraq has turned into a mess. They deny that there are poor people in the US. They deny that this country is on the verge of financial turmoil. But hey, at least I get a $1500 check this May that I can pass right on to Haliburton! I also like how Bill O'Reilly keeps calling John Edwards names because he brought up the fact that so many of our brave soldiers are now homeless and poor. Apparently it is only okay for the right wingers to feel sorrow and compassion for our brave military, including those who no longer serve and who have to live with their injuries and nightmares every day. Anytime a democrat, liberal, or even moderate brings up anything military related and showing compassion for the soldiers and for other war victims, they are labeled as "unamerican".
