Buried Treasure

Buried Treasure In and Around Dodge City
Looking for some extra cash? You might be able to find it right here in Dodge City. Believe it or not, treasure hunters have searched the grounds surrounding Dodge City for decades searching for buried treasure. It’s no joke! There are several stories of explorers and outlaws who for some reason decided to bury their treasure for safe keeping and never returned to reclaim it. One such story is of the famous explorer Coronado who supposedly buried $3 million near the Arkansas River. Speaking of the Arkansas River, if you’re a treasure hunter, that might be a good place to start. Coronado shared his hiding place with others. Reportedly, a cache of $500,000 of gold and silver bars is buried somewhere along the Arkansas River west of Dodge City. Similarly, 4000 Spanish silver dollars are said to be buried near the Arkansas River and Santa Fe Trail. But treasure hunters shouldn’t stop there. A cave northwest of Dodge City, concealed by landslides is supposedly the hiding place of several outlaw caches. A stolen Wells Fargo chest containing an undetermined amount of gold nuggets and dust is reportedly buried a few miles east of Dodge City. And near Ensign, if you’re lucky, you could stumble upon $500,000 in Spanish gold that is reportedly buried there. So next time you’re out walking along the River, or are just out around town, you might keep your eyes peeled for that next hidden million!

And speaking of treasure. It will not be long untill the Medallion hunt begins!

Of all the Dodge City Days events, I look forward to that one the most! A close second is the Duck race.

Opie A. told me that this years races will be in Wright Park. He implied that there will be more than one race. I've already bought my Quack Pack for $50.00 at the Ambucs show this last sping at V.S. Mall.

It's a good cause with the proceeds to help the Alley!

I've hunted west of dodge for years but nothing Spanish yet. I did find a 1839 silver half dime. The Spanish silver that was buried west of town? would probably have been Spanish Milled Dollars. Also known as Pillar Dollars, 8 Reale and Piece of Eight. 21 bags with 1000 silver dollars per bag is thought to be buried near here.

I have found 1 Spanish Reale but was not west of town. Here is a picture of the one I found.

Taking part in the Dodge City Days Medallion Hunt has become a tradition for our family since the beginning. My parents house becomes Medallion Central where we all share ideas. Although we have yet to find it it is a lot of fun none the less.

Exactly how does this Duck race work? I heard that there were some high dollar prizes last year, but have never been told how this works.

I heard last year it was on dirt but they tore that up and this year it will be asphalt...or was it the other way around?

$7,000.00 is the Grand Prize. I can't remember how many other cash prizes are to be awarded but there are many.

For $10 you get to lease a duck. $50 you get a quack pack (6 ducks). Each duck has its own number.

This year there will be eliminations heats leading up to the big race. The ducks are put into a big pond of water, which hopefully is moving faster than last year...and the race is on!

Opie or Monica Astorga can get you more info. You'll find them in front of Wal-Marts on the week-ends I believe.
