The original title on this post was "How can we afford NOT to elect this guy?"

My question is how COULD we afford to elect him. Dems want to repeal the Bush tax cuts which would send our already limping economy straight into the ground, add univeral healthcare...(how much do you think this will cost and WHERE will the money come from?), and Obama talked about making education more accessible for kids....(how much will that cost?)

Education is already accessible for kids. They can work, pay attention in school and get scholarships, join the military or take out student loans and pay for it themselves.

Our country is moving very quickly towards people expecting the gov't to pay for their needs and wants. THIS MAKES ME SICK. If you want healthcare go pay for it or find a job that will pay part of it...If you want to go to school do well and get a scholarship or pay your own way. I'm tired of people standing around with their hand out waiting on the gov't to take care of them...UGH.

Speaking Of Handouts...

Here is part of story from the Wichita Eagle. These people are getting laid off...with all the gov't handouts and such they are receiving you would think they just lost everything due to a hurricane or something. Keep in mind a lot of these people are PROBABLY illegal.....

Tyson Foods notified about 1,500 workers at its Emporia cattle slaughter and processing plant they would be laid off. The layoffs constitute more than 10 percent of the area's jobs.

Some employees are already out of work, but laid off workers will be paid through March 25.

Some of the plan's highlights are:

• On Friday, volunteers from Emporia State University and community groups will help laid off workers file their taxes in hopes of securing refunds.

• On Feb. 16, residents can attend a community fair from 1 to 4 p.m. at Flint Hills Technical College in Emporia. Dozens of potential employers, state and federal agencies, local banks, real estate agents and social service agencies will be there to help.

• Feb. 18-20, a rapid response team from the Kansas Department of Labor will be at the Anderson Building at the Lyon County Fairgrounds to sign up workers for unemployment benefits.

• The Salvation Army has agreed to take on the most immediate needs.

• The United Way and a community group, Friends in Faith, will organize regular food and fundraising drives. United Way will look at creating a one-stop help center.

• Friends in Faith will help translate any materials between English and Spanish.

• Flint Hills Community Health Center will provide health care on a sliding scale.

• A team from the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services will assist with utility bills, benefits applications and dealing with domestic violence.
• The technical college will offer programs to retrain workers in a number of fields, such as truck driving, certified nursing assistant, emergency medical technician, welding and more. It will also offer GED, adult education and English classes.

• City and state officials will set up van pools to allow low-wage Emporians to work in Topeka and other cities.

• Local state legislators promise to introduce legislation to fund entrepreneur classes through the Emporia Main Street program and to let local school districts take funding losses over several years.

This sounds like quite a big of city/county/state tax payer money being spent on these workers. I wonder if they would do this in OKlahoma?

You are not in Oklahoma. They are trying to be proactive and help folks help themselves. The help is available for anyone thru the unemployment office. Easier to take the office to them than to get flooded with over a thousand folks on monday. I don't see the big issue with this. You have to have paid into unemployment to reap the benefit and you need a SS# for the benefits. The other groups are not reliant on "tax" monies. They are non profit and get more donations than tax breaks. I'm sure donations come from all walks - including rich republicans looking to burn out some $$ to get into thier tax bracket.

Bottom line is - it's people helping people...................... is that so bad? Besides it's bigger than any complaining anyone can do. I just don't see this as an illegal issue - I see it as an umemployment issue which is happening all over the country. Thank business for that - they are going to make the profit off the backs of the illegals then cry foul.

AOO

Imagine if everybody's dream came true. Namely we really had world peace. Imagine that. Real world peace. A lasting world peace. Just imagine that. Imagine we would suddenly have no need for a military and thousands like you would be without jobs and benefits. All at once. Just imagine it if you can. I'll bet you'd be in line for all the benefits you could get your hands on.

And speaking of govt. programs and handouts, how do you feel about veteran benefits? Education, health care, etc? Do you use these "handouts" as selling points when recruiting?

1st of all we could do "hypothetical" all day long. Just imagine if we didn't need to use gas to run cars, paid less taxes etc. The fact is we will always have a military and world peace will never exist in your lifetime or mine.

2nd, Your so called "handouts" to the military are EARNED. In MY humble opinion any soldier, sailor or marine that is willing to spend months away from his family and put himself in harms way in Iraq or whatever god-for-saken place they may send them has EARNED those "handouts". We call them benefits. They are benefits just as if you were working in a company and received healthcare insurance or whatever.

A REAL HANDOUT is something that someone gets for doing pretty much nothing. If I was sitting at home all day watching Oprah and eating cheezy poofs waiting on a check...well that is a hand out.

You have obviously never served a day in the military for your country..and that's ok...a lot of people haven't and a lot of people are not qualified to do that NOR have what it takes. But for you to call the benefits the soldiers earn a "handout"...well..that speaks VOLUMES of your character. Have a good day buddy.

Imagine a society where people took responsibility for themselves. Imagine a society where all people want to achieve or be successful and are not penalized for it. Imagine a society where EVERYONE contributes not just those that have attained a certain income level. Imagine a society where people stand up and say "I am responsible for ME". Imagine a society where people only have the kids they can afford to raise.....Imagine that....

It wouldn't happen in this country. This country was formed on the basis of two differnt groups of people with two completely different viewpoints on one subject, but coming together somewhere (close) to the middle. I don't see that changing anytime soon.
