I agree, Highway. I notice that almost every day. On the Plaza, there are homeless (at least their signs say they are) who say some of the most outrageous things. People pass by and just shrug it off because they feel sorry for them. But if you or I were to spit out the same rhetoric, somebody would notice and we'd get sued for it. Don't know how that works. I'm just not quite ready to smear my face with dirt, grease my hair up and sit on the corner with an old tin can to find out, either.

I have a reputation for "forgive and forget" to such an extent, I tend to not do anything about it until all hell has broken loose. Then I break loose with such anger and bitterness that people wonder where it comes from.

Mud's problem is that he doesn't understand that HeadStart is set up to give kids with fewer advantages a "head start" on their schooling. It is simply a social leveller-- If he can afford tp pay for preschool, he should be expected to do so.

I don’t recall reading anything to indicate Mud can or can’t afford an alternative. Did I miss something? It does appear he works for a living, but not every hard working stiff is affluent. Poverty does not discriminate.

As of September 17, 2004 Bright Beginnings has a total enrollment of 394 students. The ethnic distribution of the students served by the program are as follows:
1.52% Asian American
.51% African American
76.65% Hispanic
9.90% Multi-Ethnic
11.42% Caucasian

Course if you look at the breakdown of families with Head Start age children it probably looks as disproportunate as that enrollment info. Over all DC and Kans just doesn't have real high wages and to have your child in Head Start you have to meet criteria. If Mud meet the criteria which his family must or they wouldn't have been standin in line ...... duhhhh then they should be first in line - period.
Stats can be twisted to show what you want them to show - there are too many variables to rely on #'s........... sometimes your eyes are the only calculator you need.

The first priority in the preschool programs should be to teach kids English. However, kids from English-speaking homes are needed to "help".

I still think it's a shame that public moneys are used to teach children our language. Maybe that sounds racist, but it's practical. I didn't go to school to learn our language. If they're here legally, then they should be learning the language at home.

I don't think it's racist at all. The real kick in the head is our children and grandchildren have to suffer from lack of attention while some are taught to speak a language they should allready know in order to be a productive memeber of our country.

I wanna "get back to basics", but I don't want to get so far back as to have to teach the children the language. Besides, some still predominantly speak the "mother" language at home and it just makes it doubly hard. I agree with ya 100%, LG

Do ya think they had this same conversation when the Polish,l Jews, French, Italian, Chezck, and gosh knows who else showed up in New York when it was the only real way to get into the ole US???? I think not - hell they were tryin to learn english on the boats commin over. Sad but true - I see no problem speakin the "mother" tounge - so long as there is equal opportunity for those commin here to sieze opportunities that I'm capable of getting too. I don't think it's fair to give them "special" opportunitites and leave me with the "old" ones........ I want money for a business, I want money to have more kids, I want more than 1 SS# so I can work as many systems as LuLac and AFLCIO can get for me........SIGN ME UP!!!!!
