I heard on the news the other day, that the Georgia legislature has passed a bill or something, that requires ALL Georgia schoolchildren to be taught in both English and Spanish, up through the 5th grade !

We all hate to admit it, but studies done in Europe have convinced me that children pick up foreign languages faster than teens or adults. It's always good to have an extra language hidden in your back pocket - bilingual employees are favored over monolingual employees in a lot of industries - especially those that work with overseas or foreign companies.

I don't mind teaching the children an extra language - I just don't want it to interfere with teaching them all the other classes they'll need. AND, if Spanish is to be taught as a second language, then the Spanish-speaking kids need to learn and use English as an everyday language as well.

If my kids were forced to learn Spanish, I'd be damned if I wouldn't learn it too, just so I could keep up with what they're saying! Same goes for Spanish-speaking families that don't want to budge!

Well it finally happen, just on the news;
Kids kicked off a bus for speaking English

KSTP.com
Updated: 01/09/2007 10:25:54 PM

Excerpt:

Imagine sending your kids off to school, but when they get to the bus they are told they can't get on because they speak English.

That's right, English.

It happened to a few children in St. Paul and now the school district is apologizing.

Rachel Armstrong sent her kids to pick up the bus as usual Monday, but after the driver let the kids on, he told them he would not pick them up again. He even said he wouldn't take them home that afternoon.

Armstrong left work early Tuesday, forced to pick up her kids from Phalen Lake Elementary School.

Her twin girls, 10, and her son, 8, were kicked off their regular school bus. They were told by the bus driver the route is for non-English speaking students only.

I was aghast when I read this story. Does anyone any background information on St. Paul, MN and the school district is divided between English and non-English speaking kids...and English speaking kids aren't allowed on certain school buses?

The article isn't as bad as you made it seem. You are like CNN only reporting PART of the news...lol. Had you pasted the REST of it, it would look something like this...

Administrators at St. Paul Public Schools admit the district made a mistake when it stranded the kids at school Monday.
However, the district points out, that particular bus route serves one of three language academies. The one at Phalen Lake is for Hmong students learning English.The academies all have separate bus routes to keep its students together.The district decided to enforce the separate routes beginning Monday, but it did not tell the Armstrong family.
"It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of these kids and we made a mistake. The kids should have gotten home that day," Dayna Kennedy, a public relations representative said.
The district also discovered the Armstrongs no longer live in the Phalen Lake School boundary because they moved last year.
So even though the district apologized, if they want to still go to Phalen, they are going to have to get their own ride.

In actuality regardless of language they were not allowed to ride the bus. The school admitted the mistake and it's not the big deal the headline, nor you, made it out to be. The bus was made for certain students learning a certain language going to a certain school. Next time post the whole story Wolf. LOL

Yeah, the site you pulled it from was just another discussion board, and that poster chose not to enter the whole story. Here is where the whole story is.

I posted what the news article said, and "It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of these kids and we made a mistake. The kids should have gotten home that day," Dayna Kennedy, a public relations representative said.

the school district still should have taken them home. those buses are paid for by whom. question now is was the parents notified of this at the begging or sometime before this happen, I know they moved since last year. so it should have be caught when the kids were signed up to ride.

Let's take a different view of the story and change one little thing: a non-english speaking child was left while english only buses took english speaking children home.

What would be the public outcry, now?

{just stirrin' the pot, a little}
