If I divide my gross by 48 weeks, then multiply it by the number of weeks a teacher 'works', it's less than my take home, let alone my gross. And I don't have a college degree. And I don't have to take the crap some of the kids dish out. I couldn't do it - I've met a couple of teachers I didn't like, but by and large, they are a good bunch of people. They definitely have my respect and admiration.
I know that this was from quite awhile ago, but I read the thread that asked inactive members to join in & say something. I don't usually have much to say unless I know about the topic. Since I have friends in the district, I can add to this topic.

I agree with KC Muffin...most of my friends are teachers & I know that they work an avg. of 10-12hr. days & most weekends. They work in June teaching summer school. They also take continuing education classes during the summer, if not through the whole school year. The teachers I know are not making the $40k a year, even after the raise they received. Since the district is filled with senior teachers, the avg. pay will be stated as a higher amt. It is not untill you've been with the district a certain amt of yrs. & have your masters plus 30 more college hours that you start earning the avg. pay. Listening to what those teachers have to put up with day in & day out, I would like to see those people that say they have it easy, spend time in their shoes. I wonder how many of those people could actually cut it & still love their job as much as the teachers I know love theirs.

And there are probably and equal amount that don't like their job.

I'm going to throw out a few things here that are taught in the Army. Sometimes it's not ALL about money. Unfortunately the public doesn't put a premium on those who serve...the public. The ones that keep your streets safe (with the exception of DC), the ones that put the fires out, the ones that TRY to educate the kids and those that defend freedom and are called on to be away from their families and put themselves in harms way.

In the Army we have a set of values:
Loyalty
Duty
Respect
SELFLESS SERVICE
Honor
Integrity
Personal Courage

Soldiers, just like most teachers do what they do to become overly wealthy. Most do it to serve something larger than themselves. Teachers...are serving. The soldiers as a whole in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and countless other places do not strike, do not complain, petition, hire lawyers or such...they serve, they serve something larger than themselves. Teaching is the same way. When someone starts college to be a teacher if they think they are going to make 90,000 a year teaching is SW KS they have been smoking something from bowl. Also teachers DO have the choice to relocate to somewhere that pays more. They CHOOSE not to do this. Soldiers have very little choice. It's unfortunate more of the civilian population doesn't adopt at least a COUPLE of those values...LIKE Selfless Service.

For all the teachers that complain about their job and their pay....they know what they are getting into BEFORE they become a teacher....THEY make the choice....
I do agree though teachers are our front line soldiers in the war on stupidity...they need support and funding to wage their war but they also should perhaps adopt some values like us!

Isn’t that typical in any profession? It’s called internship.

Yes, I agree. I do hope that they get out of teaching if they don't like it.

You are correct. Students that go into teaching know that they are not going to be rich.

IF (& that is a big IF) it were possible to negotiate the salary of a soldier by his/her worth & job demands, wouldn't there be others to help fight for them?

I know many teachers that serve their kids selflessly because of who they are, not because they are told they have to be when they became a teacher.

Soldiers are not the only people in service jobs that have values. I'm not trying to be rude, but just because you have a poster of values you have to adopt, doesn't mean you are the only profession with values. Teachers may not have to take an oath, but those teachers have the same values. They just don't have to advertise what they are really made of.

I would also like to add, that with any profession or duty, there are those that can make that profession or duty look & sound bad. Just because there are a few bad apples in the bunch, doesn't mean as a whole they are all bad. You cannot lump all teachers together in one bunch as you cannot lump all soldiers in one bunch. A group of out of control soldiers doesn't mean they are all out of control.

A of O, I am not trying to disrespect you or your job. I am only trying to get you to see other sides to this discussion.

Yes, I was only explaining that every teacher doesn't make the $40k & how teachers can earn that amount.

No problem. I see the other sides...Like I said before, I believe teachers are underpaid along with other service jobs like police and firefighters. I'm just saying that teachers here take a job KNOWING that the district doesn't value them like they shouldthen some complain about the pay and benefits. They DO have the option to MOVE to a place where they can make more money.

Maybe it's not the money. In some districts this is not allowed:

You know, districts that say they appreciate cultural diversity, but act otherwise.
