Now that's a bit harsh isn't it? Just because my income level is low enough for my children to attend Bright Beginnings it means I depend on the government to raise my children?

At least you are getting the assistance you need and your children are getting an education. Hopefully you work for a living and support your family but the thing that pisses me off is the people who have 10 people living in there house who all work at Excel or National Beef, driving Escalades and Tahoes and all of those fancy vehicles but still find some way to live off of "OUR" tax dollars. Those are the people who piss me off. I agree with Jolly. My husband and I work our asses off to raise our family. Yes we live in a good neighborhood, drive decent vehicles and have a fairly decent income but when you're trying to raise a family and support yourself it's hard on today's wages and cost of living. GOOD FOR YOU TO BE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GET YOUR CHILDREN AN EDUCATION BEFORE KINDERGARDEN.

Lots of parents are too stupid to know that education is a life-long experience.... and they think they have to wait for our government to start the processes...

I'm not waiting for the government, I work with my daughter at home and daycare works with her when she's there but I for one can't afford to pay for daycare and pay to send her to school 2 days a week for 2 hours a day, and that seems to be all we have around here for an education.

Ya know what they teach in pre school they usually teach in daycare. We are talkining numbers, knowing your name, ABC's, basic colors and such. This doesn't take a certified daycare, headstart, or teacher to teach. These are basics that everykid should have. Do it yourself........ Geesh my 30 yo knew this stuff and got it thru daycare in DC........ he didn't go to school till he was in Kindergarten. There are plenty of daycares that have structured instruction..... the parent does have to follow up and reinforce what the child learns during the day. Daycares have structured instruction to apply for the enormous amount of grant money out there.

If your Daycare isn't helping you fill in the gap between school and "head start"............ ya better find one that does......... I'm sure there are some good ones still in DC.........Head start didn't teach my kids to read when they were 3............... the structured home life did........ and I was a single parent many times during the raising......... I never qualified either cause of home ownership - so I understand that too.......... didn't change what I saw as a parent responsibility. Ya just do what ya need to do. Don't worry - it all works out - when it's over you don't thank Head Start......... you thank your lucky stars that you had so much one on one with your kids......... and take pride in what you helped them become. Be proud of what you do!!

I believe all the children should be allowed to go to Bright Beginnings no matter where mom and dad work.. no matter how much money they make.. no matter how many aunts and uncles live in their house.. and no matter what kind of vehicle they drive. ALL CHILDREN NEED A GOOD EDUCATION!! Maybe if all the children received the attention they get in Bright Beginnings then they would grow up and make the right choices for their own lives and learn to love school and stay out of gangs. just my opinion

Are you endorsing a Federal School???? that's what Head Start is........ It's a way for those who maybe less privledged either by $$, education level of the parents, or # of parents in the household to keep up with those luckier folks who maybe have 8 - 5 jobs, some college, heck even a HS education, 2 parents, etc. It's a program designed to keep all the kids equal....... are you saying Head Start / Bright Begginning kids are ahead of your run of the mill middle income kids???............. If that's so then it's the fault of the parents not the system........ If you have the means and time to give your child a "head start" then you should do it......... I don't need a govt ran program to educate my children or grandchildren.......... Jesus I'm not THAT lazy..... it involves some work and committment........... it's called parenting....

I'm glad there are such programs so when my grandson gets to school he won't be bogged down by kids that didn't have parents that could stay at home to begin the basics. Or didn't have grandparents around to help with the basics........ It's supposed to create a level playing field for all kids. The trick to it is that the parents who can are "supposed" to do thier job.... simple concept but it seems in this "it's not MY responsibility" society...... it's easier to have the govt do it for you?????................. NO thanks!!!!

Bright Beginnings

Sad part is that most parents just use Bright Beginnings/Headstart as a free babysitting service. Let the government pay to have someone watch our kids for a while. And sadly enough most parents WILL NOT teach their own kids the basics in life......like their colors, numbers and alphabet. I've even had parents tell me "it's the schools job, not mine" My........we've grown lazy! To be gut level honest, it's the parents job, and not some school, no matter what the income level is, etc. None of my kids attended a preschool or headstart, and all three were in the top of their class. All three were either the top one in their class, or next to top. And it was because we, the parents, took time to teach them........It's all part of a parents job......not the governments or the schools.

I agree with what each and every one of you just said. I do work with my children and so does my daycare, the only reason I tried to even put her in Bright Beginnings is because she's so advanced that she was getting bored with home and daycare, and I wanted her to learn before Kindergarden how you need to act when you're in school because she's a typical 4 year old. She has a hard time sitting still and talking out of turn. I wanted her to learn the manners of school in a "pre-trial" area. I can tell her all I want but you know "parents don't know anything".

I sent my oldest to Catholic kindergarten...... took him bout 2 hours to figger out how to act.

My youngest came home the first day from public school kindergarten and told me I needed to "take him out of school" - he didn't want to go. He had a friend that went one day and his mom decided to not send him to kindergarten. It wasn't manditory........ not sure if it is now or not.

Moral of story............ Kids will figure it out............ don't worry!! There are always other kids worse than yours when it comes to behavior.... If your child is polite at home, respectful of others at play....... they will be fine in school.
