Yeah, but in our generation when you screwed up in school the teachers were allowed to swat your ass to get you back in line. Also, in our generation we didn't have to worry about $100+ jeans or $300 sneakers.

I am for uniforms.......but only if they are enforced.

The school should buy the uniforms and the students purchase them through the school. Doesn't do any good to have 15 different pant styles that fit into the catagory because they are blue. Uniform is just that.....UNIFORM, all the same. Don't wear it right, go home and change and get detention. Uniforms promote unity and school spirit, like it or not. You don't see the teams in sports wearing their own version of a uniform do you?

I also agree that uniforms are a good idea. However, the way that the Middle School runs it really does not make any sense to me. There is really no standard to the uniform other than it needs to be khaki or blue pants, and light blue or white shirt. Other than that, there is still the fight to get the right pants and shirt. I know because my daughter drives me nuts in this category. I really think that if you are going to require uniforms, do as Sacred Heart does. You can wear whatever you want as long as it comes out of this particular catalog, and is this color.

Personally I think this is where the biggest problem is. No support from the administrators when it comes to disciplining students. I don't know if it's because administration has no backbone or they simply don't give a sh*t but these kids get away with stuff that is unacceptable.

Kids learn to ignore authority and become a problem for society. The schools smile all while standing in the government funding line.

Instead of No Child Left Behind it should be called pre-welfare training or How to get by in life with little to no effort.

I realize parents probably love the idea of uniforms. I'm sure it saves them money and makes dressing kids easier, but I think the concept is screwed up. Everyone can still spot the little gang-bangers, the rich kids still huddle in the halls and everyone still knows and makes fun of the poor kids.

Aren't schools meant to prepare kids for the future? Give them the tools they need to be successful? Not that the uniforms are fooling anyone, but how is hiding the truth that, in the real world, we are not the same going to help?

What they need to learn is how to deal with the fact that, just like in school, rich people get special treatment and control what others do, middle class does the work and the poor can only hope to be middle class some day. Now this may sound like I have a poor out look on life but far from it. It's simply the facts of life. I learned it in school and now I can deal with it in life.

I don't ever remember judging fellow students by what they wore. Thinking back I do remember the rich kids being well dressed and the poor kids wearing old/hand-me-downs but I never classified them by what they wore but only by their actions.

I also have a real problem with allowing Spanish to be spoken by students except in Spanish class. How is a teacher to know these students chattering in Spanish aren't calling them names, making plans to attack another student or some other criminal act? I remember getting in trouble in school by a teacher for speaking Pig Latin. I can also remember Hispanics being told to speak English.

I guess maybe I'm just out of touch with what kids need today to prepare for entering the work force. They need to get used to the rich ignoring the middle class and poor who work for them. They need to get used to working with non-English speaking co-workers who will probably be their Foreman/Supervisor, and that playing the race card gets you out of trouble by scaring the hell out of people.

I'm for uniforms as long as the teachers and adminstartion wear uniforms too. Even in prison the guards wear a uniform too.

In Cuba, all the school children wear uniforms. Fidel certainly eliminated class there.
Of course, he can also have his minions line up all the little trouble makers and shoot them in the head during assembly. Solves the "gangbanging" problem.

I think uniforms look nice.. if inforced. The truth is that even IF they wear uniforms you will still have gang bangers. They will still intimidate other kids by looks, and there will still be threats. The problem is that these kids are not all stupid. They watch adults so they know when to say and do things without getting caught.
I know it has already been said here several times. Uniforms are a nice start, but there needs to be a major crack down on disipline. Do not put up with the gang mentality. I also dont think it is all gangs. Some of it is just kids with bad attitudes. These kids do not get corrected at home so they think it is ok to act this way at school or any place else for that matter. Uniforms help everybody look the same, but not act the same.

We could debate the pros and cons of uniforms for days but there are some undebatable disturbing facts that should be corrected.

We think we've come a long way in aiding in child development but from what I see kids are far worse off today. Going postal with guns in schools, running around in gangs willing to kill each other, and innocent bystanders, for nothing more than wearing the wrong color cloths and having absolutely no respect for themselves and others.

We bitched because Bush refused to except that his plan for Iraq was not working and wanted to "stay the course" yet we are guilty of refusing to except that regardless of what physiologists think our kids are in trouble. What we are doing is not working and needs to be reevaluated.

We can lay the blame on parents, and to some degree it's true, but in reality I believe it is the liberal society we live in. We try and treat kids as adults when they aren't. We empower them with Rights which they have yet to earn and so don't understand.

I've heard the excuse that it's because today both parents are forced to work leaving kids to fend for themselves. To that I say BS. Both my parents worked as did the parents of most my friends and none have suicidal tendencies or postal tendencies. Plian and simple it's a lack of moral teaching. Kids today don't really understand right and wrong in the sense most of us do. To them Right is something given to them at birth and wrong is only a matter of your view of the Constitution.

By treating kids as adults they now expect the same rights and see themselves as equals. I'm sure some of you liberals are saying well it's true. I say pat yourself on the back for being the major problem in our society. You've done what liberals do best.

in my email today

GOD BLESS THE MOTHERS WHO DRUGGED US!
The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a
methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining
county and he asked me a rhetorical question, "Why didn't we have a drug
problem when you and I were growing up?"

I replied: I had a drug problem when I was young: I was drug to church
on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was
drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather. I
was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug
to the woodshed when I disobeyed my pa rents, told a lie, brought home a
bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or
the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that
was asked of me. I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed
out with soap if I uttered a profane four-letter word.
I was drug out to pull weeds in Mom's garden and flower beds and
cockleburs out of Dad's fields. I was drug to the homes of family,
friends, and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow
the yard, repair the clothes line, or chop some firewood; and, if my
mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this
kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed. Those drugs are
still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say,
and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and, if
today's children had this kind of drug problem, the whole world would be
a better place.
Amen
