School Uniforms

Okay, I need your help because I would like to survey those on this board about school uniforms. I don't know how to set it up. Are you for them or Agaist them. I'm personally against, because I believe it is putting a wolf in sheep's clothing. A rumor is that the school board would like to go district wide with uniforms. My comment is you have a surveilence system at both schools why do we need uniforms. My son had his stuff taken at school and the camera's caught the 3 students. However, our district Attorney decided on an apology letter instead of any punishment. So my point is what does it matter what you wear if you don't have any punishment when you violate someone else's property.

Uniforms are a good idea. It makes it harder for gangs to wear their colors and such. I believe the middle school has uniforms and it is somewhat effective. I'm in the DC high school weekly and let me tell you...the teachers DO NOT enforce the clothing standards at all...albeit out of fear or apathy most just don't enforce it. AS for the camera's they only record what happened but do not prevent certain things. Certain clothes make it easier for kids to bring weapons to school (yes I said weapons and some DO bring weapons) and drugs (yes...lots of drugs) If uniforms would make it a little bit safer then why not?

My son is in the middle school. He was attacked in a class room when there was no teacher present. The gangs may not be able to wear their colors and I would be fine banning certain colors. I just don't think it matters what you wear if the rules aren't enforced. The administrators need to stand up but everyone is scared to speak out and nothing is done. I say pull the bad seeds out and send them to alternative school and bill the parents. At some point the school needs to stop trying to be the parent and put the responsibility where it belongs. You have em You raise em and You pay for them....

I don't like the idea of uniforms. I think we need to be able to spot trouble, and trouble can often be identified by what they chose to wear. Profiling? you damn right! No child left behind? biggest screw job I've ever seen. No child can be forced to succeed that doesn't want it, and they hold the rest back. Sure the schools make more money off the program but at what cost to the kids that really want to succeed.

Accountability, thats whats lacking in todays society, and it starts with our kids.

In the real world it doesn't work that way. I have a ?, how would you define "the bad seeds"? What would constitute a "bad seed"? P.S. The alternative school (SOS) is full. There is sometimes a wait to get in. Next idea?

Amen, and a lot of parents AND schools don't hold kids accountable. I think accountability, discipline and teamwork all start with a uniform though... (perhaps it's the military in me). I would invite anyone to come to the high school with me for a couple of hours and watch. Watch the kids walk right in front of teachers and administration wearing clothes in a manner that are OBVIOUSLY outside the guidelines or holding hand, kissing ect. and the teachers/admin turn the other way or not say anything. In some of the classes you have the kids basically telling the teachers to "shut up" and such. Don't believe me...go see.

Disciplan, and you'll find the bad seeds. After so many times in trouble the so called bad seed would be gone so he or she can't take away from the students that want to learn. If the teachers at the highschool are having that problem then shame on them. I drove a school bus of 60 kids and trust me we didn't have camera's and I didn't have an office to send them to, but I maintained control and watched the highway so not to have an accident. I say the administrators are letting the kids control and once it starts it's hard to stop. It won't matter how you have the kids dress if theres no rules and punishment.

I'm for uniforms - it's easier on the parents, no class discrimination on the kids, everyone looks the same in skivvies............... after that is accomplished you can concentrat on the actual behavior - sounds like the high school is havin trouble doin both

Smack down a kid and watch how fast that kid is screaming “child abuse.” That’s something that has gotten out of control as well. Harsh words work for some kids but others you need to get their attention first with a little pat on the backside.

You still haven't told me what a "bad seed" is...If I kid is late for school 3 times in a semester is he a "bad seed"? If a kid wears the wrong clothes to school a couple of times in a semester is he a "bad seed"? These are discipline problems...do they get sent to your alternative school that you are having the parents pay for?
