Yeah I got that impression to. Year round school seems to be loved by those that actually have done it. I have heard that stats support year round because of the "constant" learning mode (no 3 month break)

Now for shifts......(day evening and night) That isn't soundin to good to me. Maybe if school started earlier so shift workers could get to work or started later for some. If you are running "shifts" your gonna need more teachers. You are talkin bout a whole new crew of teachers - not likely I would say. Ya know lots of our parents worked shifts and truth is usually those parents worked nights or days - they need to be lookin at studies regarding the best times for kids to learn - NOT the best time for mom and dad. If mom and dad need to work opposite shifts - too bad - lots of folks do and make it work. Not every thing is about what these parents want to make thier life easier. Parents need to pick up on the responsibility of raising what they brought into this world and quite whinin that everyone else needs to change for them.

I worked shifts at times but took less pay to work days - M-F when I was raisin kids. It's what ya do.

For DC - here's my guess. There won't be "shift" school. Ya'll will hire more teachers aides to babysit these kids cause the parents need someone to help raise them. Comprimise isn't something these parents.....(yes these parents!!) are willing to do - so once again the masses need to help the workers raise thier kids. Think of all the extra bus drivin jobs commin up!!! Hang on to ya'lls wallet.............

Ok. i admit i wasnt thinking about the whole " shift " idea, BUT i still stand by what i said earlier, THIS ISNT ABOUT WHAT RACE ANYBODY IS. Made in the USA took what was said and made it about RACE. I believe the school board member made it about RACE. Sorry for not being clear earlier.

No, Made in the USA was not making it about "ETHNIC RACE", mitUSA was making it a "Money Race", cause I am tired of paying for everybody elses crap. Let the little "b------s" go to school and work all 3 shifts, like I have to do to pay the damn taxes. Been doing it my whole life, and still never get caught up. By the way, buy some more busses, so we can buy fuel to bus everybody all over town. Whatever happened to the student going to school in his/her/its neighborhood school? Then they could walk, like we used to have to do, and we could save all that money on busses, fuel, drivers, etc.

Got some other ideas too, but you wouldn't want to hear them!

Trust me when we get off on the "race" thing - there won't be any doubt left that "race" is what we are talkin about.

I do wonder tho since actually mitUSA and I are both talkin bout money - let me be the one to actually ask the "race" issue.

You do realize DC is now prodominetly hispanic. Those hispanic for the most part are employed as shift workers at the packing plants. The problem is not that hospital or nursing home workers can't get thier kids to school. Note that these industies were "shifts" from the very conception - Packing plants eased into "shift" work.

So why hasn't this been an issue before???? Trust me healthcare workers don't make as much as some plant workers. So tell me how is this NOT about race?

"Those people" could be plant workers, shift workers or ethnic workers. Seeing that "shift" school has NEVER been an issue........ which one do you think it is????? I think the statement "those" related to SHIFT workers that are whinning...............OMG...... most of those are plant workers that are hispanic I bet.............That isn't racists - that my friend is just the way it is.......... Don't need no colored glasses or fancy words for the truth..........

Please correct me if I'm wrong but as a healthcare worker myself I know what it's like to have to have a daycare that opens at 5:30 or 6 am... I know what it's like to not see my children much more than 4 hours a day, I know what it's like to pay someone to take my children to school and take care of them after school. It often took most my salary but I never once even entertained the thought that the ISD should fork over the money to change it's hours so they could better serve me. Could that be cause I'm white? or could that be cause I was born here and know better?.......... Nope - must be just the way it is........ It aint bout me - it's bout my kids and what THEY need.
How about some clarification. Others are thinking of shift as in running the school normal days 12 months a year with students going 9 of 12 but not at the same time.
You're right as usual, Hiway! Anyway, that's what I was talkin' about. And it doesn't have anything at all to do with shift workers. It has everything to do with saving taxpayer money and whether the voters would go along with it.

Just a question...if it took most of your salary and you were dropping your kids off at 5:30 in the morning....having someone else take the to school and pick them up....and not seeing them for a majority of the day....to give up most of your salary...do you think it would have been better for the kids if you just stayed home and do the mom thing... and be there to pick them up from school and take them to school? Was it worth it since you were giving up most of your money?

On the shift school thing...wouldn't you have to hire more teachers? How would they do the school activities such as debate and the sports? Would they have practices held in shifts? LOL

The teacher-hiring was one thing I didn't ever catch from the conversations. I would expect, though, that a teacher's salary would be based on availability. If a teacher, for instance, was available for all terms, then their salary would be higher than for one that was available for only 3 out of 4 terms or 2 out of 5 terms.

There you go talking about school all year long again, when everybody else is talking about shifts as in day-shift, evening-shift, night-shift.....

Yeah, I know - what a pain in the arse! I kinda just dismiss the idea of having day-shift, night-shirt, evening-shift schools. I can't see how it would ever be successful. It's hard enough for adults to do shift work, how could we ever expect our kids to do it? And talk about body clocks bein' out of sync.......half the kids (and the teacher, too, prolly) would just sleep through the night classes!!!
