| Shift schools is an idea that's been kicked around for quite a while. It would reduce the need for additional buildings, but increase the cost of utilities. From what I've always heard about that issue, people aren't quick to jump on the bandwagon because there is still a big farming contingent in Southwest Kansas and people want their kids to be home to help in the summer. My thought is to make sure the farm kids have the traditional schedule. I think it would work, although it's a hard issue in Kansas...........

| I don't necessarily think the cost of utilities would be that much more in Dodge City if we went to shift schooling. I work a rotating shift and there are many instances where I drive by a school and all the lights are on in classrooms well after midnight. With the lights on, all we would need are students in the room to not let that energy go to waste.

| My point was ALL RACES GO TO THE SCHOOLS... ALL RACES WORK AT THE PACKING PLANTS. THis isnt supposed to be about RACE, it is supposed to be about kids that needs schools, and parents that need to work AND still be able to raise their kids NO MATTER WHAT THEIR RACE!! |

| You might be surprised about that. A family that moved back from Las Vegas (where they have year-round shift schools), commented they hated to lose that. The class size was smaller, not everyone had a break at the same time, which allowed more parents to take vacations when their kids were out of school - instead of having to work around everybody else's vacations at work. The kids had more frequent and shorter breaks, which allowed them to retain the material better from one "session" to the next. Because the sessions were shorter than the semester we know, there were more opportunities for the student to be assessed and held back if necessary. And when held back, it wasn't such a stigma because the others in the class didn't necessarily know about it. And they were only held back maybe a session instead of a whole grade. And then there are the financial breaks. There are real positives, but the negatives would be hard to overcome in SW Kansas.

| How about some clarification. I get the impression Wizzard is referring to shift as in day shift, evening shift and others are thinking of shift as in running the school normal days 12 months a year with students going 9 of 12 but not at the same time.
